SANTO DOMINGO. - The ambassadors from Venezuela and Ecuador today denied online media reports that presidents Hugo Chávez and Rafael Correa had cancelled their participation in the Rio Group Summit, scheduled from today Tuesday to Friday in the Dominican capital.

Ecuador’s ambassador Carlos Manriquez said Correa will attend to the event and is scheduled to arrive in the country via Las Americas International Airport at 6 p.m. Thursday. "Yes, president Correa and our Foreign Relations Minister are going to be present here in the Dominican Republic," Manriquez said.

As to Venezuela, its ambassador Francisco Belisario Landis said if President Hugo Chávez cancels his visit he would be one of the first to know, and that he would inform the media.

The diplomats held separate press conferences in the embassies of the South American countries.

Funny how Chavez always has oil money to win friends an influence people (foreign), yet , the poorest Venezuelans lot has not improved all that much and the rates of violence and crime continue to rise. I supported this guy when I thought he was serious about breaking down economic, class and racial barriers that existed in Venezuela. I condemed the U.S./Miami-Cuban sponsered coupt attempt in 2002. Chavez sould stop trying to be the reincarnation of Simon Bolivar and stay out of other nation's affairs

Chavez will undoubtedly use this forum to blast tehColumbians for attacking his friends, the FARC. whom he has been supporting, according to reports, to the tune of US$300 million.
No doubt he will reiterate his denial of that allegation by Columbia and the n launch into a lengthy tirade against the "Imprialist US".
th bes way to handle this guy is to isolate him to the environs of Venezuela and not publish anything he says or does.
That'll drive this ego-maniac absolutely crazier than he is already.
He has madcap dreams of becoming the "dictator of South America".

DR is emerging on the international political seen as it's economy continues to grow at phenomenal rates. It's good to see that DR is able to head such a great organization as the Rio Group and is able to attract the presidents of these Latin American countries to attend. I hope the DR continues to manifest itself as an important player in Latin American politics. This year's invite to the Rio Group is Haiti. That's good to see, as DR rises, it will take Haiti up with them. Hispanola es pa'lante que vamos. We have to keep working together for the greater good.

The media has also been reporting that Chavez was possibly giving logistical support to the FARC in their attempt to get material for a "dirty bomb". Alleged monetary and logisitcal support to terrorists by a state ran by someone who is no freind of the US, talk of WMDs, pre-emptive strikes. This script sounds awfully familiar.

The main reason given for the US invasion of Iraq was WMDs and alleged links to 9-11. This was later proved to be based on distorted and/or faulty intelligenge and even or own President has said that there were no WMDs in Iraq and that Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11. The reasons for going to war were bogus, end of story. As for the war not being of primary concern here, do you live here? Obviously not for if you did you would know that people are very concerned about the war and our presidential candidates are paying alot of lip service as to how they would steer the course if the war if elected. As for following us home, please. Even the CIA has acknowledged that our invasion of Iraq has exacerbated terrorism world-wide exponentially instead of stifling it. Stop giving me sound bites that even the white house has stopped using, goulet. It's called critical thinking. Try it.

The American people were lied to and deceived into war by the current administration. That is a matter of fact with ample documentation at this point. You hiding your inability to debate with concrete ideas and/or information under the guise of childish comments won't change that, either.

Yes, either lies or ... professed ... ignorance which the filthy GOPs in the White House blame on bad CIA intelligence.

Actually, the proclaimed reasons for going to war were more lies than ignorance.

This is the main reason why most liars have fallen love with the war.

While the above statements are true, I think that by allowing armed foreign forces (FARC) on it's territory, Ecuador has surrendered it's sovreignity and any right to complain or retaliate against another elected government (Colombia) seeking to defend itself. Chavez is not crazy (as the U.S. media tries to make him appear), he does not want a fight with the U.S. because he would loose everything and win nothing. Do not be so sure the senior officers in the Venezuelan military will follow along with all his stunts, Remember his reforendum on extending presidential powers and terms? It is widely believed the army made him accept the rejection of his "President for life" plan.

Otero can go from making bad performances of TV to trafficking in drugs and and human beings like the other members of the Miami mafia.

No doubt, in a few years, he will be a millionaire.

Pushing drugs, especially on children, is a prime path to financial success in the USA.

Miami is notorius because law enforcement fully cooperates with various traffickers.

Otero only want to make big money out of the drug and slave trade.

If Leonel pulls off Rio meeting on the Malvinas and Ecuador things, Rio Group may become something that everybody has heard of ... rather than just a few diplomats.

The important thing for Leonel to remember is that Alvaro Uribe of Colombia and British imperialism are poison.

Cristina Kirchner and Hugo Chavez are the good guys with whom Leonel should side with on the Malvinas and Ecuador.

Lula and Brazil will always run around in a circle in the middle, trying to find a way to make money by ripping everybody off.

The most stupid thing that Leonel can do is to support Alvaro Uribe's lies and aggressions or be evenhanded between Uribe and Chavez..

For the DR's sake, Leonel should do everything he can to help Chavez.

Venezuela can be a good friend of the DR with oil, chickens, and all of the DR's agricultural exports.

Colombia exports cocaine which the DR already has a surplus.

US imperialists want Leonel to back Uribe, the vicious imperialist running dog.

Bachelet Wants Colombia, Ecuador Reconcile

http://www.plenglish.com/article.asp?ID={BFFF70BC-9533-4B92-8B3F-5CB3DF6CEA2F})&language=EN

Santiago, Chile, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) President Michelle Bachelet, who is to travel to Dominican Republic Thursday to attend the 20th Rio Group Summit, wants that entity allow a reconciliation between Colombia and Ecuador.

"Our aim," Bachelet said Wednesday, "is to solve this situation, we want a peaceful region and we know that our countries need it."

After the violation of the Ecuadorian bordering zone on Saturday by the Colombian military forces, the Chilean stateswoman expressed solidarity with Ecuador and called Colombia to give an explanation.

"Chile has sought solutions since the beginning to allow that violence and confrontation are not even greater consequences in our region," the head of State stated.

Also according to you Pinochet, who has the blood of thousands of his countrymen on his hands and who's regime is also responsible for gross violations of human rights including, but not limited to, torture, deserves to be called a national hero. oooo

I marvel at the moderation with which you tactfully describe GC.

GC calculatingly aims to drive his correspondents bananas and he is often successful.

It is not just his rude manner of expression that is so disagreeable, rather it is his habit of using rudeness to go off topic, making an infantile exhange of insults the substitute or new topic.

CG changes the topic from what the DT picks to an exchange of insults because he is empty of information on the topic, so he gets off topic quickly before the nothingness in him is exposed.

There are other people here I occasionally condescend to an exchange of insults, like TB, but others stay on topic and the insults are a side issue or spice.

Venezuela's Chavez puts communist as labor minister

CARACAS
Petroleumworld.com, April 17, 2008

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez named a veteran communist leader as labor minister on Wednesday, days after ordering the nationalization of a giant steelmaker [employs 14,000 workers] whose workers are fighting for better pay.

The first task facing Roberto Hernandez, a long-term member of the Venezuelan Communist Party, will be to negotiate a new labor contract with the union at the Ternium Sidor steel works.
