SANTO DOMINGO.- Doctors grouped in the CMD union began a 48-hour strike in public and Dominican Security Institute Social hospitals today, to demand a wage increase.  It’s the second strike in as many months, after the Government rejected the salary increase arguing lack of funds.

The capital’s media reports that the few patients who visited the hospitals went to change their appointments. Doctors stopped working since 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, attending only emergencies and patients in critical state.

CMD president Waldo A. Suero said the strike was successful and affected all public and IDSS hospitals.

He called on the Government to that next to the CMD seek a solution the and new conflicts and cautioned that the doctors could paralyze the hospitals for as long as one week and even longer, if their demands aren’t met. "We challenge the Government to a dialogue with a concrete proposal to solver the conflict."

I hope the doctors get their $59,000 salary. They deserve it. I hope teachers get a raise too.

Why not pay the doctors a sum at least equal to the monies received by our wonderful politicos in congress ,I guess saving lives and caring for the sick and poor doesn't compare to riding in brand new s.u.v's and dining with their lastest girlfriend thats warrants a pay raise to these doctors. It is real sad that it is the state of affairs that we are in and nothing is going to change there minds as to giving a decent salary where it is surely needed.

If only the drug companies would swoop in and bolster the doctor's paychecks with added "incentives". The U.S. is no better! :(

Today I went to one of these hospitals and all the doctors were sitting in front of it, while a 15 yr old girl was hold her crying baby, who needed help. They said that the emergences rooms were open but they were all fill because everyone even those who didn't need the attention were in there because it was the only place open to talk to a doctor.

I understand the doctor's stand but this has to end soooooooon!!!

If I had it my way the best paid people would be teachers and people who work in healthcare. I would also stop giving raises to politicians. Education and healthcare are the 2 most important things when it comes to development.

totaly agree with you guys, but don't you think that 100+% increase in pay raise sallary in one single shot is to much. why not 25% now. 25% in six months, 25% in another six months and another 25% in one year will balance the payroll better. Hey didn't you guys heard that congress and all sectors here in this country approved a not pay raise to goverments employess for next one year.

I think this is not a matter of discussion, Doctors should get their pay raise period. We have politics that make over $100,000 a month to raise their hands in audience once or twice a month. Doctors are there every single day. I say if they want salary raise to $59,000, give them $69,000.
