Santo Domingo.– Dominican President Leonel Fernandez has long positioned himself as a statesman who rises above Latin America's political divides.

On Friday, as host of the Rio Group summit, he got a moment any diplomat would savor.Facing a roomful of presidents who traded accusations, threats and talk of war over Colombia's attack on rebels inside Ecuador, Fernandez asked embittered leaders Alvaro Uribe, Rafael Correa and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez to put aside their differences, shake hands.

Minutes later, to thunderous applause, they did. The timing for Fernandez was impeccable –just two months and nine days before the country's presidential election. A win would give him a third term.

As the newly reconciled presidents left the meeting, Fernandez aides in a nearby truck raced to copy footage of the embracing presidents for Dominican television stations.

«I have always said that he is a great mediator, a great statesman, and he showed that in spades today,» a beaming Dominican Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso told reporters as he left the summit.

The Manhattan-raised Fernandez has close ties with the United States, the market for 80 percent of his country's products. He has implemented trade deals with Washington and visited President George W. Bush at the White House.

But Fernandez has also cultivated a strong relationship with Chavez, Washington's chief antagonist in the Western Hemisphere, and participates enthusiastically in the Petrocaribe program under which Venezuela delivers oil to Latin American and Caribbean nations under preferential terms.

During Friday's tense summit, as Uribe and Chavez traded barbs and Correa stormed out of the room, Fernandez's mustachioed visage could be seen around the table as he consoled the Colombian leader or shared a quiet word with Venezuela's president.

Fernandez gave Uribe several chances to speak at length after flurries of criticism throughout the day, then quietly interrupted when Uribe cut off a speaker to contest a point.

Asking the Colombian leader to take Chavez's criticisms «in the best way,» Fernandez spoke about peace, brotherhood and regional unity before ending with this plea: «What everybody here wants is an ending with a hug and a handshake between the presidents of Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.

BREAKING NEWS

After his great "success" Lio-nel Fernandez will resign the presidency of the Dominican Republic and immediately fly to the middle east to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. That should not take more than 48 hours for this genius. Afterward he will cure cancer, end world hunger and eliminate global warming.

I think we have to pay the devil his due. President Fernadez accomplished what no one else seemed capable of doing. Just to get the sides talking was a major accomplishment. There are many problems facing the DR, and a regional war would serve no one's interests. Put your criticisms of the present administration aside for a moment ,and understand the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties with all countries of Latin America. I may not agree with everything he is doing, but he did some good work at this conference.

Josean, you crack me up. I am not a fan of Lionel's either but it is a shining moment for the DR.

Hats off to him for the grande press he is receiving and the DR as well. Hope he moves on to curing the electrical problems and the educational problems after causing world peace now:)

I am with you 100%. One thing is internal affairs another is foreign affairs. On this you and all of us are with Leonel Fernadez. Have you noticed when Spanish speaking countries get together
w/o outside interference, things could work out better ? No USA,UK,Canada,Australia,OAS-puppet.

All these had an economical impact in the Caribbean countries as well as the South American
countries. Petrocaribe as well as Colombian goods across Venezuela ,Ecuador,Nicaraguan
borders would had a negative impact in the region. Billions in trade.

True the timing was right for LF to be president for the 3rd non consecutive term and the hardest
for him, since he is to face all the internal neglets left behind.

At any rate he came in with flying colors and no one could take that away from him, not even the opposition party. Who knows maybe CHAVEZ will finance the promised refinery as well as other low intrest loans, which DR so badly neeed.

josean, I believe TFiske has a good point. It is time for you to offer your alternative. It is easy to attack those who actually put themselves out there and do something. It is another thing altogether to make constructive suggests and offer alternative plans. Put yourself out there josean, let's hear your plan or your selected representative. It's time to put up or shut up, if you excuse the expression.

Josean,

What changed your attitude man. You said in a previously article that you congratulate the Dominican President and that every DOminican should be proud of his accomplishment. Now you bash him. No he isn't perfect but you have respect what he has done. Let's be more respectful.

ignorance will always live with those who made the negatives comments about one of the smartest president in latin america, leonel fernandez. read about him and you will find out how well educated he is. when he first became president of the dominican republic, he found the country with a really bad economy and he turned the economy around making it one of the best in latin america. he is not superman to solve all the problems in the dominican republic but he has done lot of things than any other president in the history of the dominican republic has ever accomplished. now his reputation goes even higher after solving this crisis between venezuela and colombia. what a great president we have. i personally hope that he can serve for another term cause i do not think the other contestants are as good as him widely speaking. if you disagree with me, please send me an e-mail at vc_samuel@yahoo.ca

You should keep your "PROZAC" treatment, its seems to me that your mind get limited w/treatment. Your president its not more than a savy opportunist graduated from one of the most mediocre colleges at DR "UASD". He has all the typical behavior of the "Tigere" of a barrio. If your president stand to "YOUR" higher standards, i don't believe your taller than four feets.

I will suggest you to move back to your homeland and taste personally his government.

As I said before. Pres. Fernandez was brilliant and demonstrated his skill as the mediator giving everyone a fair ground to state their ground. He is definitely getting elected and rightfully so. President Fernandez was immaculate and should get credit. It should also show the world that Latin Americans can resolve their own problems without foreignors acting as mediators. This is a historical moment for all south of the border. Rio Group Summit was intially created to discuss the central americans that were at war with each other and have become something bigger which gives all of us a platform to speak. Bravo!!!!!!
