SANTO DOMINGO.- The major opposition party’s presidential candidate today said the ruling PLD party’s request that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) investigate his links with his friend Panama president Martín Torrijos is "ridiculous," and Dominican society knows that “a very clear moral distance" separates him from president Leonel Fernandez.

"Only in a government corrupt from head to toe such as the one headed by the reelection candidate doe these clandestine scandals and programs can take place such as the CB payrolls via which almost 20 billion pesos of the taxpayers’ money were diverted,” said PRD party candidate Miguel Vargas.

He said he’s built his wealth as a professional and businessman, not as a government official. "There are many people in this administration who cannot explain the origin of the assets they have." He again challenged Fernandez to debate their personal wealth and to solve today’s main problems which he said has taken the majority of Dominicans desperately to the brink.

Vargas said Fernandez’s government if for a "small group" who make more than a million pesos and, while the majority gets a miserable pay, citing doctors, teachers, police, the military and workers, while still others have no job.

Tuesday, the PLD filed a request for the JCE to investigate if Vargas’ wealth is linked to a contract signed when he was Public Works minister, with Panama’s Torrijos.

I think "WE THE PEOPLE" in this so-called "DEMOCRACY" deserve to witness a "DEBATE" to get to the bottom, of where all this "HEAVY ass TAX MONEY collection" is going to.

I agree with you. This debate would offer the perfect opportunity for Lie-onel Fernandez to debate the PRD candidate and the PRSC candidate expose their corruption to the Dominican people and have them both arrest on national TV.

He would win with 100% of the vote.

They could televise it via Pay Preview to the wide world diaspora and the revenue could be used to build new schools, ok ok, the second METRO line!

What do you think about Guillermo Moreno?

Source DR1

Moreno proposals at ANJE
During his speech at the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) meeting with 2008 presidential candidates, former Attorney General Guillermo Moreno, a newcomer to politics, spoke out in favor of a government that makes production a priority, reducing taxes on production, and increasing taxes on the highest earners, as reported in Hoy. He favored a reduction in the 16% ITBIS tax and in the tax on fuels. He said that the present economic model is sustained by the consumption of imported goods. For instance, he said that commercial banks have allotted only 6% of their loan portfolio for local manufacturing, while endless loans are available for purchasing vehicles.

He supported changing the composition of the Monetary Board, which oversees monetary and economic policies in the country, to incorporate more members from the productive sector. He said it is currently dominated by the financial sector.
He also favored banning presidential re-election and said he would change the system for selecting judges, as reported in Hoy. He said that the Judicial Branch is highly politicized, and thus is not independent from the Executive Branch. He explained that the country is not prepared for re-election because it lacks solid institutions that can prevent Presidents from using state resources for their campaign, and limits the potential to fight corruption.
He would also demand transparency from politicians, especially those in public office, and said he would review the energy contracts.

In his opinion, the DR has become a paradise for impunity. He proposed the creation of a civic power that can impeach a President if he violates the Constitution.
Moreno advocated allocating 4% of the National Budget to education as established by law. He said he would extend the school day until 4pm, and would include lunch. He also would allocate more funding to early education.

Moreno is running for the MIUCA, and is probably the least known of the candidates.

Ever wonder why he is the least known of the candidates? No wonder "Lie-onel" dosen't want to debate hiim!

Josean:
Yesterday, I thought you were serious about your opinion, however you have been trashing other politicians, and speak passionately about the Guillermo Moreno man, then you are another politician speaking marvelous things about your man and candidate??, words go a long distance before the reality hit us all hard, anybody can speak all sort of things when they have not proven themselves in the real world of politics, and if ever politicians have proven one thing right is, that once they are in power, they are all the same, to engorge theirs, and their followers pockets, and you seem to have a big interest in Mr. Moreno, I cannot say I doubt this man and what he is expressing publicly, since I don't know the man well, I simply doubt everybody who will enter into the fracas of politics, they all end up being the same.

Were have I been "speak passionately about the Guillermo Moreno man?"

I am just responding to your comments and those of others who feel "all" politicians are the same. I do agree that most are but not all. Certainly Dr. Bosch was not.

I only bring up Mr. Moreno because he appears to be the novelty of this campaign. There certainly might be others, but unfortunately it is hard to hear from them with the narrow, money driven media coverage of political campaigns.

I am a critic but not a cynic. I truly believe there is the right woman or man out there that can spark the change we are all hoping for, we must never lose the optimism of that happening.

I am just sharing information of one possibility, if you have others I wish you would share those as well. I hope you take me at my word as I take you at yours.

More info on Mr. Moreno.
