Santo Domingo.– Almost half of adults in the Dominican Republic would grant a new presidential mandate to incumbent Leonel Fernández, according to a poll by Hamilton published in El Día. 48 per cent of respondents would back the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate in next month’s ballot.
Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) is second with 31 per cent, followed by Amable Aristy Castro of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) with 19 per cent, and Eduardo Estrella of the Fourth Way (LCV) with one per cent.
In the May 2004 presidential election, Fernández received 57.11 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Hipólito Mejía of the PRD and Estrella of the PRSC. Fernández had previously served as the Dominican Republic’s head of state from 1996 to 2000.
A subway project in Santo Domingo –which is expected to cost $725 million U.S.– has been one of the most controversial ventures of Fernández’s term. On Apr. 7, opposition PRD leader Orlando Jorge Mera criticized the current administration, saying, ‘‘His is one of those governments that wants symbolic pharaonic public works that stay in people’s memories, despite the need or cost."
The next presidential election is scheduled for May 16. A candidate requires more than 50 per cent of the vote to be elected in the first round.
Polling Data
If the presidential election took place today, who would you vote for?
Leonel Fernández (PLN) 48%
Miguel Vargas Maldonado (PRD) 31%
Amable Aristy Castro (PRSC) 19%
Eduardo Estrella (LCV) 1%

Metro costs
Spending on the Santo Domingo Metro has exceeded the RD$20 billion mark, according to Diandino Pena, director of the Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET). Pena tried his best to allay fears about ballooning costs, saying that the total budget would not come to more than RD$25 billion. Pena also assured the public that the Metro would be ready by May, adding that the project's final details would be dealt with during President Leonel Fernandez's second presidential term. He said that some questions left unanswered include recruiting and training employees, creating a model of operation and determining whether that model would be private, mixed, or public sector. He also explained that 'Metro' legislation has to be drawn up.
Get the contradiction "ready by May" but "questions left unanswered include recruiting and training employees, creating a model of operation" and 'Metro' legislation has to be drawn up!

Josean, where did you see that article? are you saying that the model for operation is yet to be determined? i refuse to believe that. are you trying to say that first they build it, then decide who will run it? is that what you are saying?

Diandino is quoted in DR1 as leaving unanswered questions about recruiting or training employees. He does not mention anything about operating business rules either.
I can only speculate they will have Spanish technicians running it if we are to believe it will be in operation by May. Possibly with some type of OJT program, or then again "Lie" may personally run it himself.

I would like to know something. Is Josean Haitian or something? If not why is Rubi constantly mentioning Haiti whenever Josean posts his disagreement with something that has to do with the Fernandez administration? Just because other Dominicans disagree with something in their country that you agree with Rubi doesn't make them anti-Dominican or Haitian. And Haitians could care less what's going on in the Dominican presidential campaign except for those that live there. As I said before you are obsessed with your neighbors from the west my friend.

"Almost half of adults in the Dominican Republic," they say.
That's just Great!
Is this poll "by Hamilton [which one?] published in El Día," talking about Haitian or Dominican "adults?" Or Is it talking voter registered and unregistered "adults?" Or is it talking about likely voters [ often defined as "adults" who voted in the last three elections] or even registered voters?
Well, at least they're adults of some kind. Thank God and thank his Nazarene, too.
" Face-to-face interviews" they say.
Lovely, so, nobody can check this unspecified "Hamilton's" phone records to see if he or she or it or whatever made the 1200 phone calls. Wonderful.
"Conducted in March 2008," they say.
Such extraordinary specificity Hamilton supplies us ... in other words, Hamilton says, sometime in "March" he interviewed.

The ASISA poll, published in El Caribe April 4, interviewed March 24-26 and the NOXA poll, published in Clave April 10, interviewed between March 25-30, finding respectively Leonel with 58% and 54%.
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....sident-a-first-round-win#commentsWhen, if ever in the month of "March," did "Hamilton" interview? Was it after NOXA on the 30th [an impossibility] or during ASISA and NOXA's interview period or before, that is, before March 24.
This info would let us judge the flow of the race, if any.
We can't summarily dismiss "Hamilton's" poll because El Caribe on April 9 published a poll with another fuzzy interview period that found Leonel with only 46%, thereby supporting "Hamilton's" 48% found sometime in "March." .

What I take away from this is how mis-guided the PLD's claims that they had 58% of the electorate backing them. Small discrepancy!
These polls are nice to half, but they are soooooo vulnerable to manipulation that it's hard to trust them, except as a gage as to CHANGES in perception. In other words, forget the 48%, where did the last Hamilton poll have Leonel? if lower than 48%, then we can say leonel is moving up, maybe to 48% but maybe not; is the PLD was @ 58% and now at 48%, then the PLD is going in the wrong direction.
On another note, I'm in Istanbul and loving it! We just came from a restaurant, and guess who we heard, our embassador of Dominican Culture, Juan Luis Guerra. Anyhow, glad to see DOminican culture is reaching Turkey, even though many people here don't know where the DR is :-)

No I am not Haitian, but I love the Haitian people as I love all of God's creation. Unfortunately amoebas have apparently learned to use the internet, and it upsets them when Dominicans see Haitians as equal brothers and sisters.

To Josean: I assumed you were Dominican but Rubi mentioned Haiti so much whenever you posted your views I believed that you might actually be Haitian. Of course I should've known that biased parasites such as Rubi would always attack his own brethren whenever they criticized anything about the DR. In Rubi's eyes..the DR is a highly advanced and socially perfect nation and all problems that do exist have to do with Haitians. I can expect Rubi scapegoating Haitians for DR's problems but putting down a fellow Dominican simply because he/she does not agree with policies that is happening in his/her country is nothing short of stupid. Anyways peace on to you my friend.

I think we need to give Fernandez support although he isn't perfect . What other candidates are better qualified for the presidency in this campaign? Fernandez may have thought he found a solution before doing the math but hey DR has a metro and that is a sign of advancement while the people can learn how to read the stops some other time and DR-CAFTA hasn't effect dominican goods. Why bother fellow haitians and dominican brothers with people that have all the opportunities as an immigrant to waste it. This should be a good example for the dominicans on the island to read how backward SOME dominican abroad can be. What's worse is they assume they are representing there country in a good fashion while the reality is they are doing their countrymen a dis-service. Ask them what have they done to help the dominican republic? What awards have they obtained for humanitarian projects in there beloved country? What did they achieve in the 1st world country?
