Santo Domingo - An Italian tourist who was visiting the resort of Puerto Plata, in northern Dominican Republic, was killed by a man who stole from him 30 cents and a mobile phone, the authorities said Friday.

Puerto Plata police said the man confessed to having killed the foreigner with a knife on Monday because he thought the 64-year-old Italian –whom he had followed for days– had more money.

"He was attacked on a street of Puerto Plata, but the criminal has already been arrested, and he confessed he killed the tourist because he thought he had a lot of money," a Puerto Plata police spokesman said.

This is totally outrageous and unacceptable. My condolences to this mans family and friends.

Imagine what the real crime statistics are, since probably we do not hear as much about incidents of low profile common Dominicans!

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Im always hearing from the tourists themselves, about how they got robbed. Some of them get robbed within, the same Villas that they are renting.

Some get robbed while walking in broad daylight or night.

About a month ago, right here in central of caberete, there were policias national chasing after a thief, shooting at him, in broad daylight,in front of tourists. Finally they shot him in the leg, so they were able to get him.

This murdering lumpen ... the class that neither sells nor buys labor but lives because it steals what it wants ... likely had good reason to believe that the European tourist, prancing around Puerto Plata, had more than 30 cents on him.

Since the lumpen "followed [the tourist ]for days," this suggests that the tourist didn't keep his eyes opened as he pranced around town or stayed too long in Puerto Plata.

"He was attacked on a street of Puerto Plata, but the criminal has already been arrested," the DT reports.

This "He" was the tourist, now dead.

So, how could the lumpen be already arrested before the lumpen attacked the tourist on the street?

If the laws arrested the lumpen before the lumpen attacked, then the laws in Puerto Plata are quite good at their jobs.

So that what the L in PLD stands for now: "Partido Lumpen Dominicano, steals what it wants!"

0000

"He?"

Is "he" the lumpen, now jailed, or the tourist, now deceased, or the Puerto Plata police spokesman, now involved in another case or the PLD leader, now following somebody else?

Most likely it's the tourist that your presume to be Haitian, although the tourist is called an Italian, because the tourist in the only one of the four possibilities who qualifies as a "was."

Yeap.

How much have they raised?

My condolences to the family of the victim.

As for the thief, I hope he get's what he deserves. I always insist, crime in the DR is out of control, and we are risking getting used to it. I'm in anger every time I read a story like this. A loss of life for something material, it doesn't matter if he had 30 cents or 5000 dollars in his pocket, it's ridiculous that someone get's killed just to get robbed.

You thieves go rob someone that works in the government and has a nice luxury jeepeta and a orange license plate!!! Those DO have money in their pockets at all time!!! I see no problem with a tief robbing another thief!!

EFE

I guess this is why the so-called "all-inclusive resorts" enjoy so much growing popularity in the Caribbean.

Look at the ricasso, the thick portion of the blade joining the blade and the handle, shown above.

Have you ever seen anything like that?

Jim Bowie would be ashame of his blade.

In Texas, we see ourselves as highly civilized and super urbaned; so, it's illegal to go around carrying something like that.

But an AK 47 or M16 or 45 or 38 is OK to carry.

Unlike Florida and Arizona, we don't get that many Italian tourists.

We really miss them.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa

JRRubirosa,

Is one suppose just ignore, that it is happening, instead facing the facts, that there is a crisis, people are in the streets, robbing because they have no way of supporting themselves.

No Jobs and High Prices do not mix well !

That more people are jobless, some because Zona Francas have closed down, others because there night jobs have curfew, so the business cannot afford to stay open.

Why dont you moved down here hermano? Well maybe you'll do alright, since you are such LAMBON de Leonel.

belial, if you had a brain you would be considered absolutely insane. What in the world are you talking about ,Dude? A man is dead and you are on some flakey pseudo-class struggle rant that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. You are discusting.

If you had any sense at all you would be ashamed of yourself. But of course you don't. What difference does it make how long this man was in Puerto Plata? Does it justify the taking of a life that a man was "prancing around" as you call it? And how do you know he was "prancing around" anyway? Were you the one watching him? You are sick and demented beyond belief.

This is becoming an everyday occurrence here on the North Coast

In the past 5 years violent crime has increased 20 fold

Unfortunately, the ex pats who own property or operate businesses here continue to tell potential tourists "Everything is safe" to make certain people continue to arrive in this drug infested "paradise"

The DR is not what it once was, now it is controlled by gangs of drug peddlers and robbers looking to make a quick buck, and it IS NOT Haitians but home grown Dominicans

time2rize: thanks for the compliments but think about it when HM was in power and his legacy.

At the end is Your own business and family, I do go to DR every month so at the end I might suffer too...I DO HAVE FAMILY TOO

Regarding the "Lambon" word Your crossed the line.

Very simple is that PLD had take the country to different places so far, once the country suffers again then "Ignorant" people will once again whin and complain about it.

Leonel Fernandez is not on charge of the worldwide economy, I do live in the US but You know what right now gas is almost US$4.00, food is expensive too and they are laying and firing people off in all companies, recently CITICORP did it with 9,000 people and at least Dominican goverment has some compassion.

In the Us the only Compassion is the "Irak War"

In the DR there seems to be something like a civil war going on with all those crooks mastering the streets... or at least that is what it feels like. DOn't want to seem paranoid, but no way I am going there anytime soon until the security issue is resolved. The only thing you hear is about robberies, killings and what for? For a few pennies???

What has our beautiful and once so safe island turned into the past decade?

It's all the fault of DRUGS, poor justice (indultados "crooks pay cash for liberty"), poor police work, poor lighting in the streets, the repatriated desesperados and the lack of social security for the poorest. Welfare, that is what we need. I don't mind paying more income taxes if that buys me security, a nice quiet walk through the streets of my city.

JRRubirosa,

I know that Leonel Fernandez is not on charge of the worldwide economy, but he is in charge of Homemade Criolla Products, so there is no reason of putting such a High tax on it, like if the products were being imported.

Our GAS is $5.16 Regular $5.50 Premium $4.58 diesel Today, not to mention cooking Propane gas is $2.06, while in the U.S. is

2008/04/21 - 11:45 EDT Regular$3.191Premium$3.511 Diesel $2.913
http://www.gas-cost.net/dashboard.php
Again if the GOV lowers taxes it get help the People, especially when transporting goods from one part of the country to the other.

U.S. problem is that it keeps on printing more Monies, for the War on Drugs, War on Terrorism, etc... and there is nothing of value to back it up. They are printing monies out of thin air.

Maybe DR should start circulating more of other strong currency, than of the Dollar.
