Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) reported that Cubana de Aviación IL-62 plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the Las Americas terminal, and its 117 occupants aboard were unharmed.
The H201i262 aircraft took off from the terminal at 2:09 p.m. headed to Havana, Cuba Sunday, and at 40 nautical miles, the pilot notified the control tower of engine problems from a fire alarm.
The IDAC said rescue teams assisted the passengers and crew minutes after the plane landed on the runway, as the airport was temporarily closed to air traffic.

An IL-62, a Russian jetliner, Cubana could do better than that, they should lease an Airbus or two, thats what some of new airlines of the former soviet states are doing.

The DR's emergency preparedness is really on the ball. Good job.
So, a flight leaves Las Americas at around 2:09 PM, hmm.
Lunatics or terrorists in Miami will take note, to be sure. Of course, the US lunatics already knew about the flight. US lunatics enjoy blowing up passenger jets in midair. The US regime under Bush pardons, protects, and honors the US lunatics or terrorists who blow up civil aviation planes.

Belial, are you talking about that Cuban-American Alpha-66 guy that blew up the Cubana airliner in the 1970's? the fact that the State Department let him back in the U.S. and the Department of justice decided not to prosecute this guy, who is by anyone's interpretation, a mass murderer, is a true disgrace!

That is why communism FAILED although some people still don't get it and why not is truly beyond comprehension.
When you board these planes which I of course have it is like being thrown back to the early 50's. If I had it to do all over again I would have flown on Copa through Panama and felt better about it.
I guess Airbus is all that is available to Cuba to buy or lease anyway because Boeing won't do business with the Cuban Government. I don't even know if a company would lease to them as the risk is very big.

By doing so, you are no better than they are and in fact are just as guilty of perpetrating these crimes against humanity as they are.
You all continue to produce false evidence designed to mislead the readership in order to vilefy those with whom you are jealously opposed simply because they possess the capability to amass financial independence where you can't because you don't have the ambition to do so.

"You all continue to produce false evidence.."
What false evidence, TB? The cuban that both posters are referring to, Posada Carriles (let's call him by his name), is indeed guilty of the crimes attributed to him by the posters here. The man orchestrated a plot that resulted in the death of 73 innocent airline passengers. It's all a matter of public record. Even the US Justice Department has reffered to his person as "an admitted mastermind of terrorist plots and attacks". It matters little, though, as Posada Carriles has been free to enjoy his life in the US as a result of his connections to american intelligence organizations and the very influential cuban-american lobby. A communist, or communist sympathizer, I am not but I find it troubling and highly hypocritical that a nation that is waging a supposed war on terror would itself harbor a terrorist.

oooo
zak325, that's it.
But there two big guys, not one -- Luis Posada and Orlando Bosch
Posada bragged to the NY Times in 1997 that he and Bosch masterminded the 1976 bombing of the Cuban airliner off the coast of Barbados that murdered 73 people.
So, George H. Bush promptly pardoned Bosch who resided in the USA during Bush Sr.'s regime.
During Bush Sr.'s regime, Posada resided mostly in Guatemala.
Posada returned to USA in 2005 during the current Bush Jr. regime. Posada was arrested by the laws but Bush Jr. told the laws to let Posada go because Posada is well-liked in South Florida.
So, you see how the lunatics and terrorists in the USA behave.

Terrorisim is terrorisim, armed attacks on unarmed civilians should be condemned no matter who the victims or the perpetrators are. Hamas firing rockets at Israeli towns is terrorisim, attacking IDF soldiers is combat. The September 11th attacks were terrorist mass murder, a roadside bomb in Iraq is combat. If someone wants to bring down the Castro regime, they should take on the Cuban military directly, not bomb civilian airliners and hotels.

Bringing back the original issue, dangerous Soviet-era airliners, this incident will likely spell the end for these museum pieces. As Cuba slowly emerges from the shadows it will have to rebuild it's transportation systems, replacing cattle trucks with Chinese buses is easy, replacing it's airliners will be harder. Cubana would be a logical customer for Boeing jets and would buy them if they could, but because of the embargo this can't happen...yet. The aircraft made by Airbus Industries (EADS), all contain some content of U.S. origin and as such, are subject to the embargo. To the fustration of the Europeans , they cannot sell their jets to Cuba either. It is in Cuba's own interest to ease restrictions on it's people and guarantee basic political rights in order for a new U.S. administration to consider lifting the embargo against Cuba.
