El Nacional reports from New York
NEW YORK. - More than 20 percent of the Dominicans registered to vote in New York in the May 16 presidential elections still don’t know where they’ll cast their ballot, said president Leonel Fernandez’s campaign coordinator here last night. "The negative effect this situation could cause in the flow of voters would be more than significant," said Carlos Feliz in a telephone interview for newspaper El Nacional.
He said although those registered to vote are responsible for notifying changes in addresses and other details for their better location, "the Electoral Central Board also has its share."
Feliz said the Electoral court has yet to send the first communication to the voters in the state of New York and criticized the lack of a media campaign to designate their polling places and notify the time.
Fernandez’s campaign coordinator in New York State said the number is “scandalous,” because neither the JCE nor the parties could determine the percentage, “perhaps because they have the incorrect certificates or bad telephones. It’s necessary to look for a way for those people to call the numbers available so they find out where they’ll vote."
He said although those voters were registered even as far back as 2004, it’s become impossible to locate them in the current process. "This almost 20 percent is an alarming number, which could affect the process more than significantly, because if before hand there is that percentage not locatable, and added to the number from natural abstention, it raises it to a much higher percentage."
