Santo Domingo.- For the fifth time in the current Dominican Medical Association president’s (CMD) tenure, doctors walked out of public hospitals to demand a salary increase to $RD59,000 per month.

Today doctors didn’t show up in their offices or performed surgeries, attending only emergencies, as patients couldn’t receive medical attention.

CMD president  Waldo Ariel Suero threatened to radicalize the struggle of doctors in case their demands are not met.

The protest by around 14,000 doctors affected 162 Public Health and Social Security hospitals today, heeding the call for the 24 hour strike.

These doctor's who swore to help patients should all be locked up. The government is willing to give the salary increase if they work 8 hours like many most of us do. The doctor's want an increase salary wise but only wants to work 4 hours what kind of crap is that. This is all political. Most surgeries are longer than 4 hours what are they going to do in the middle of the surgery just leave if they over extend there 4 hours.Only in DR you have crap like this going on. In the US they would have been fired. I tell you one thing if anything were to happen to my parents and they are not able to recieve medical attention because this clown wants to strike, I will rip his head of his shoulder. The poor are the ones being affected, the elderly and children.

The fact that Doctors make less than an average Dominican factory worker in the US is ludacris and insane. How can you expect professionals to work for $1600 dollars a month? Only in the DR money is put into waste projects, but not into the basic needs of society and what really counts. So put it this way, a person that goes to school for many years and invest a lot money to pay for such education, only to have some one from a remote village with no formal education migrate to the US and make more money than what they do. I do not know, but I would have to give it to the doctors on this one. Finally, remember that the DR is constructing projects that are often on part with industrialized nations, therefore, there is nothing wrong with professionals asking for such salaries as well.

While I agree that demanding a 4 hr work day is ridiculous, the Doctors are underpaid. Most of them could make more money working in a factory in the USA>
