Santo Domingo.– The 3rd Cuban Traveling Book Fair begins on
Monday in the city of Montecristi, Dominican Republic, and will tour other seven cities in the country before it ends on May 5th.
Eleven Cuban publishing houses with more than 300 titles of
different genres are taking part in this event that on this occasion is
dedicated to five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who remain imprisoned in the
United States since 1998.
Artists, academics, politicians and religious people make up
the Committee of Honor of this year´s event, presided over by the Autonomous
University of Santo Domingo along with several associations of friendship with
Cuba.
The fair will also visit the cities of Puerto Plata,
Santiago de los Caballeros, San Francisco de Macorís, Bonao, La Romana, Bani and Barahona. The program of the fair also
includes other events such as sports and recreational activities.

Cuba has railroads with working trains, but they are old trains that are used for both passengers and freight. There's a huge difference between having an old India-style railroad and having a safe, modern and efficient underground metro in a big city!

The Havana Fair is a Cuban festival that focuses on the promotion of books and is opened to writers and books from all over the world. Books are often published in extremely large and cheap editions and offered to the Cuban readers [almost 10% of the 11 million Cuban population has college degrees.]
The festival first took place in 1992, and now takes place annually between the months of February and March. It begins in Havana's La Cabaña fortress before extending to other cities across the nation, ending in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba. Over 100 publishing houses present catalogues of books including Casa de las Américas.
The turnout for the festivals exceed over a million people, often giving foreign writers more readers in Cuba than in their home countries.
The festival offers writers at least a chance to be read ... not millions of dollars in royalties.
