In a file photo, residents of Santiago south villages protest against tattered road.
SANTIAGO.- Six of this province’s communities southern today awoke to a protest to demand that the authorities keep their promises to repair the Santiago-Puñal highway.
The road which links that township with the city Santiago and the rural communities Palo Amarillo, Laguna Prieta, Estancia Nueva, El Papayo and Baitoa, was blocked with large trunks, planks, boulders, among other heavy objects.
The protest’s organizers also set tires afire to prevent vehicle traffic and to call the attention of the authorities.
Early this morning hundreds of employees walked to work and to alternate routes as the blockage of the Santiago-Puñal highway caused a massive traffic jam.
Ten months ago the Public Works Ministry had to promise the roadway’s reconstruction after protests affected thousands of passengers who use public transport between Santiago to the communities Baitoa, and Sabana Iglesia.
The organizers haven’t made a statement as to how long the protest will last.

I don't understand why Dominican protest because of roads. Whatever happened to medical necessities, food, and other basic needs.

What good are medical facilities and food emporiums if you can't get to them? I'm from the area that these protests are going on in and believe me when I tell you that good roads are VITAL to the well-being of the area. Some people will circumvent entire towns if they could due to road conditions. I don't need to tell anyone what that does to a small town's economy when drivers are bypassing it alltogether.

Men, I really remember those ugly days, except that I was a bit happy about not going to school. I am from pastor bella vista and we have one main road to go in and out of the small town. It really sucked bad and was never repaired and no one payed attention except when people were sick of it and hit thr street. This is the unfortunate condition in DR, that people have come to realize that the only way to get any public work done where tourist do not go is by resorting to violence.

to gouletcolonial, it seems you never know what your talking about. If the people can't get it to the regional capital which is santiago why would they be mad about a metro system. And who's ruby and what does he have to do with any of this? I really don't understand half the comments on this website, they always talk about something else other than the topic on hand : {
