SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Republic’s largest opposition party yesterday shook the capital with a vast march-motorcade, in which its vice presidential candidate, Jose Joaquin Puello, had to be attended after being sprayed with pepper gas.
“The path is closed to the re-election by the high cost of living, the unemployment, the crime and the most aberrant corruption in Dominican history," said presidential candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado.
In the end, at 7:15 p.m., on a stage in the Malecon, Vargas said the rally showed that "the PRD triumph was sealed" in the May 16 elections.
Vargas and Puello met at 4:15 p.m. in Villas Agricolas sector, with smiling faces and gestures of enthusiasm, heading the chants against the president Leonel Fernandez’s Administration.

The same group, that Vargas Maldonado, the same man who builds a house in the zone of the millionaires the east coast, the same Vargas Maldonado, who bought a property for one million and sold it for 800 millions, Do this people of the PRD wants more devastation in our
country, we will not allow that, every PRD experience in "my island", each time they make goverment, our country goes back 20 years, no more PRD please.

Hi DennisC,
Regarding your statement about Vargas, i'm not for PRD FYI. But isn't Vargas a self made millionare? Unlike our current president Leonel( which I attended this weekend at City College(NYC) event held for him which he did not attend lol ) who only became rich once in power? I understand that PRD has not done much for us, but we can't belittle those who becomes rich on their on, unlike our current president who became RICH once in government.

I don't see the PRD winning an election until at least 2020. Not until they get their act together and they find a Leonel-like young intellectual.

Myself im not affiliated with any party. I have been living in DR since 2004. I can personally tell you that i cannot see anything that this government has done, besides raising the COST OF LIVING.
oh and the Metro, Plus spending millions of dollars, to extract sand from Rio San Juan. to add on to the beaches of POP, and Cabarete, Which by the way has mostly washed away already, due to all this bad weather we had last year and the heavy surf we had on Semana Santa.
Speaking of HIGH COST OF LIVING there is another strike coming up, this time is a general strike.

National strike on 9 April?
The spokesperson for the 'Colectivo de Organizaciones Populares', Mr José Tavárez Fernández, has announced that a national strike has been called for on 9 April, and which is scheduled to last 48 hours, to protest about rising prices. Over the past few weeks the prices of cooking oil, flour, chicken, rice and milk have risen dramatically.
According to the strike leader, this results in considerable financial difficulties for many poor families. The government is doing nothing to help compensate for limited family budgets and, according to Mr Tavárez, is only concerned with the forthcoming election compaign (i.e. choosing a new president).

As usual, the tourist locations such as Sosúa and Cabarete will probably not see much evidence of the strike, but in the larger towns, such as Santiago and Santo Domingo, roads will probably be blocked by burning tyres and there will be some unrest. If possible, try to delay any trips to these places during the strike period. Over the next few days we'll probably hear more about whether the strike will go through - after all, there are many strikes here that are called for, but most never actually happen.

dominicano174;
if you are to believe Vargas is a self made millionaire,, then what the hell is he doing looking to become a president , OF THE PRD???, I don't and cannot believe a self made millionaire of our country, would try to become a President of a party with the signs PRD, and what they have done for our country. It is easy to post to be self made millionaire, while holding goverment positions in the Mejia four years of despair and destruction, they are documents I understand, which I have not seen I must say, that say otherwise.

Goulet, why do you ascribe sinister intents to the writer? after all, he issued a cautionary remark, suggesting people stay away from the possible trouble spots. what makes you think he seeks violence and mayhem?
From: United States
Hi Dennis,
I know Vargas once he becomes president will become more much more richer than he is now granted, we see it here with the US current president Bush and Vice president Chaenny. The only thing I was try to clarify is that while Vargas does deals that are worth millions with his on money it's the same with Leonel .

You definitely have issues, gouletcolonial. I for one do not agree with STRIKES, since they never seem to get the people anywhere. other than to get there ass whipped with water tanks.
But if it manages to get them some airtime coverage , when all the local channels are not airing PLD commercial, more power to them. Maybe it will open the eyes to Dominicans who live out of the country, to see that the DR is no as pretty as the GOV paints it.

My friend and dominican like I am, we want both I am sure of that, what is the best for our country,
while the PRD have proved to be the worst of anybody or party, I do agree with you, that all politicians are the same, moreover in our country unfortunately, but it happens in any other country, here in US and other countries as well, the PLD have not been by any means what we want, they are also there, for their own interest of becoming millionaires. but between anybody from the PRD, and I mean anybody, give me anything.

Dominicans on the Island who enter Politics do not enter to serve the people, or to be true public servants. No, they enter politics for the purpose to enrich their pockets and bank accounts.
Ask any Dominican citizen what is the number one "hook up". He'll answer, "To align yourself with a political party, the winning political party and hustle for a secure 4 year position". Therefore, trust no Dominican Politician unless he is DEAD. What Dominican Republic needs is "NEW blood, sorry to say but not home grown blood.....

(continued)........Corruption is ubiquitous. It is in every crack of every sector of society. It is in the air, inhaled and absorbed thru the pores. It has imbued the social fabric and consciousness of every citizen to the point of social acceptance and inheritance. It has become a heirloom of the Dominican society. So why praise the PLD, the PRD the PRSC, or any Dominican political party? To be a politician you have to compromise. The question becomes, "What will you compromise?"

Ladronazo, that is one of the most realistic posts i have seen in a long time. it is so silly for people to fight over which leader is better: they are all opportunists, lining their pockets. if you do not believe this , do a simple test. ask each politician to declare their assets before taking office. then ask for a declaration when they leave. if you add up all their salaries and allowances for the time of their tenure, you will see that their assets far exceed their beginning inventory plus income.you do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out where the money came from!! guys do not see the big picture. give them a subway to make them feel that they are in new york, and they believe we are doing great. incidentally, these are the same guys who cuss and swear every time they go to the store to buy groceries!!
