BAITOA.- With only hours before the close of the electoral campaign with voting on Friday, president Leonel Fernandez made a surprise visit to this town to inaugurate several works. His reelection bid includes a busy agenda of inaugurations in Santiago province (north).

The chief executive cut the ribbon for the rebuilt, 4.1-kilometer highway linking the municipal district Baitoa with La Zanja, of the municipality Sabana Iglesia, communities located in the foothills of the Central Mountain Range.

The activity also included the reconstruction of the 4.5-kilometer Baitoa-La Lima road, both works at a cost of RD$60 million.

Though concluded just days away from the elections, Fernandez promised the works month ago.

The inhabitants cheered when the chief executive’s helicopter landed in Baitoa’s sports field, and pledged to rebuild the bridge over the North Yaque River, swept away by a swelling during a storm 5 years ago.

It is amazing that only the main road was done...all those little towns like El Flaire was omitted. You cannot put a bandage on a problem and expect it to be resolved. We should have elections every 6 months, that way the government might be forced to fulfill their promises.

Those of us that reside int he United States and come from those or surrounding towns can appreciate improvements not just to the main road but to the side roads as well.

Gracias Presidente!

"all those little towns like El Flaire was omitted."

El Flaire is not part of Baitoa. It belongs to Sabana Iglesia so that might be why they weren't included in this particular project. And this article is incorrect in stating that La Zanja belongs to the municipality of Sabana Iglesia. La Zanja is part of Baitoa. Monte La Zanja, a little farther up the road as one approaches Sabana Iglesia, does indeed belong to Sabana Iglesia.
