BAITOA.- With only hours before the close of the electoral campaign with voting on Friday, president Leonel Fernandez made a surprise visit to this town to inaugurate several works. His reelection bid includes a busy agenda of inaugurations in Santiago province (north).

The chief executive cut the ribbon for the rebuilt, 4.1-kilometer highway linking the municipal district Baitoa with La Zanja, of the municipality Sabana Iglesia, communities located in the foothills of the Central Mountain Range.

The activity also included the reconstruction of the 4.5-kilometer Baitoa-La Lima road, both works at a cost of RD$60 million.

Though concluded just days away from the elections, Fernandez promised the works month ago.

The inhabitants cheered when the chief executive’s helicopter landed in Baitoa’s sports field, and pledged to rebuild the bridge over the North Yaque River, swept away by a swelling during a storm 5 years ago.
