Dominican Republic's President Leonel Fernandez
gestures after learning the results of the presidential elections.
Santo Domingo.– President
Leonel Fernandez declared victory early Saturday in the Dominican Republic's election
and pledged to continue pushing forward economic projects that have helped pull
the country out of a
deep economic slump.
Fernandez had 53.55
percent of the vote, or 1,992,290
votes out of the 3,679, 834 million
counted as of Saturday morning, the Central Electoral Commission said. The
commission had not yet declared him the winner, however.
The former New Yorker needs to
win at least 50 percent of votes to avoid a run-off. Fernandez said that he
interpreted his apparent victory as a renewal of confidence in the Dominican
Liberation Party. He said he would continue revitalizing the economy as he has
done throughout his most recent term.
His main rival, center-left
construction magnate Miguel Vargas, said he accepted and recognized the
results. He received 41 percent of the vote, while populist candidate Amable
Aristy led a batch of other challengers to hold third place with less than 5
percent.
The victory makes Fernandez
the first Dominican president to be re-elected since the country's last
strongman, Joaquin Balaguer, was ousted 12 years ago, showing many voters have
overcome hesitations about long-serving politicians in a country with a painful
history of iron-fisted rule.
In his victory speech,
Fernandez invited Dominicans to take part in a short-lived party over the
weekend, but roll up their sleeves and be ready get back to work on Monday.

Money does buy happiness , Next week I will go to the D.R. and meet with the good old PLD blues brothers band and pay off as many people I can to get the contracts I was promised. Four more years of the Purple People Eaters. readyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ? GO!
From: Canada
truth at least you wont have to introduce yourself to new thieves look on the bright side .....those 4 year old bribes you paid to hippo and the 38 thieves would have to refreshed anyway
From: Dominican Republic
Let us hope and pray that the PLD will be more transparant in their dealings in government now that they are assured of 4 more years of being in power.
They nee to concentrate on completing the "PROJECTS" that have been started, then assure that adequate and sufficient funding is allocated toward increasing the educational level of the citizenry, that the startup projects in the arena of adequate electrical supply are fulfilled, that the roadways and bridges are completed without too much "cutting of corners", that the allocation of available acreage toward the production of ethanol does not negatively impact the production of needed surpluses in food production amoung a myriad of other priorities facing this nation.
Many promises have been made in the past about all ofthe above, but very little has been done to bring about the fruition of those items. A great deal of rhetoric has been emitted andnow is the time to impliment that rhetoric into actions favoring the people.

Gobiernos humanos= fracaso.

thank god it is over and we have the luxury of not having to watch political commmercials, listen to the music blasting from vehicles. 63% gives us some peace and quiet... BUT the pundits on TV the last two days are incredible... it is surprising to me that these same pundits crying the blues that the PRD did not win don't remember it was ALI BABA (Mejia) who tried to silence them... In any event lets get to work on education and public health FORGET the metro for now and do something for all the population.. I WILL COMMENT LATER IN OPINION SECTION MY OVERVIEW

The most curious thing about this PLD victory is the absolute silence of the PRD gang of thieves,
afterwards .
I was also amazed at MVM acepting defeat so graciously without even knowing the final results
of the voting, which means, they knew before handed, it was all an illusion for the PRD, trying to mantain the party name in the minds of the fools that still follow them.
And yesterday, in the house of the party, although doors were open, only three persons were seen all day.
Have the Dominican people finally put an end to the PRD for the next generations?

Yet, a man like Juan Bosch left after seeing what the party had become, and the future gang of destructors would be forthcoming, and was he right?
Today, that party is signal of no morality from men who have taken power three times, and have manage to create a total economical devastation each one of the 3 times,
completely discredited nationally.
