Dominican President Leonel Fernandez
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.– Dominican President Leonel Fernandez's third term in office may be his toughest, as an economic downturn in the U.S. threatens a wave of budding prosperity in the country.

The Dominican Republic has been transformed in recent years from a nation of sugar cane fields to one of shopping malls and designer golf courses for tourists –closely linking its economy to the United States.

That shift helped carry Fernandez to victory on Friday. But, he warned on Saturday, economic woes are approaching. "Now we unite as a country, so as a nation we can confront those challenges and obstacles that are upon us," Fernandez said.

Experts predict an economic slowdown could hit the Caribbean nation in coming months –"just in time for the beginning of his new government," said David Lewis, vice president of Washington-based consulting group Manchester Trade Ltd.

Close ties with the United States will likely accelerate that downturn. Americans buy about 80 percent of Dominican exports and have invested heavily in manufacturing and real estate. The U.S. is also a major source of tourists and home to more than 1 million Dominican immigrants, who provide a tenth of the country's gross domestic product through remittances.

A slump in U.S. credit markets, the falling dollar and rising oil prices end a period of worldwide prosperity, according to an economic plan that Fernandez released during the campaign. In the proposal, he suggests refinancing public debt, aiding farmers and investing in alternative fuels.

Fernandez led the country to double-digit growth in 2006 and 2007 after an economic crisis sparked by the 2003 collapse of its central bank brought soaring inflation and undermined the peso.

And i have a lot of trust in Leonel, i have never heard him saying what hipolito used to say everyday wich was, si en los estados unidos esta pasando este problema porque a nosotros tambien no. Asi que palante leonel que el pueblo esta contigo y esta dispuesto a alludarte a cumplir tus metas con la republica.

Well, weather if you where for PLD or not, he won and we must face the future together. the only thing good that can come out this is that maybe and maybe property value will go down and Dominican and Dominican Americans May buy more land there. But yet again, Spain and those countries still have a good economy.
What we need is more Dominicans to invest into DR, because money made in DR by it's people. Will be spent in DR, instead of being taking out to other countries. For example the Fanjuel Family are Cubans "Suger" , the majority of the resorts are owned by foreigners. Falcon-Bridge is owned by Canada. "
And the United States has invaded DR 4 times to protect it's investments "and to kill some Dominicans". We should also make shore that the people that are working at Resort and so worth are Dominican.

FALCON-BRIDGE , DID YOU KNOW THAT AFTER THE WAR OF 65 THE LAST TIME AMERICANS INVADED A MAN BY THE NAME OF SACHA VOLMAN "CIA" WAS AWARDED THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR IN THE FALCON

Leonel Fernandez is only bringing to light and issue that should be of no surprise to Dominicans and the world in general. Econonically, we are all inter-twined with the USA. The global economy affects all countries. It's like a cancer that can spread from one part of the body to another. Conversely, prosperity to one can bring prosperity to another. I am confident LF has the intellect and surrounds himself by capable individuals to confront these challenges. Unlike the PRD who placed their cronies in positions of power but were nothing but incompetents. Even the richest country in the world (USA) encounters ups and downs. He is simply emphasizing that we should all work together to achieve a common good. Investments by foreigners or locals should be protected at all costs, otherwise, no one will be attracted to invest in the DR ever again. The key to bringing about investments is called "attraction" and LF is very good at that.

"Is it your opinion that most Dominicans hate the Americans ?"

000

Broad sectors of the Dominican bourgeoisie and middle class are incurable yankeephiles. And there is a large sector of the Dominican working class that is largely composed of reactionary or liberal yankeephiles.

But you comment targeted "most" Dominicans, not broad sectors of this and that.

There's a defect or diseased element in your question.

It appears that many Dominicans don't care for the US regime and the US imperialists who control the US regime. But this doesn't mean that many Dominican dislike the majority of US citizens who are not flaming, degenerate, and repulsive pro-imperialist reactionaries.

[After all, most "Americans" dislike the vile US reactionaries or "conservatives" or filthy GOPs ... e.g., people like Bush.]

The US reactionaries believe if a foreigner refused to grovel before the US regime and US imperialists, then the foreigner "hates Americans,"an untenable belief.

DANIEL B... THIS IS NOT the complete answer but can fit into your bag of knowledge. this is based on 22 years in this country.... they also hate germans.....and anybody who comes here to live and make a living and along the way maybe help a few through employment or charity.. they see something the can't do and are jealous.... the jealousy beings to seeth and becomes hate prolonged by their associates who think the same. of course the is a general observation and does not applyto all.. HISTORY is another factor invasion of 1916 was to secure the customs and repayment of US debt from the Germans who were the principal lenders to the DR. 1965 take your story......recent history are ambassadors(HERTELL) who screw around in politics (MEJIA).Tjhis is a funny society...some day I should write an article on it. The US reactionary, in other words, believes in an abstract identity between the US citizens and the US regime. Thus, foreign opposition to the imperialist expansion of the US regime is "hate for Americans."

To many Dominicans, the US regime is their Al Quida.

For 200 years, the imperial US regime repeatedly attacked the DR with US armed forces and more than once occupied the DR for years at a times.

So, the disgustingly smug US reactionary ask the patriotic Dominican "By the way, do you like being attacked repeatedly and occupied by the US regime?"

"Don't your people like being saughtered by the savages in the US Marines?"

"No," the patriotic Dominican often replies.

"Oh, how horrible, you "hate Americans."

But when Dominican yankeephile is asked the same question by the disgustingly smug US reactionary, the yankeephile replies "Of course, we love being attacked by the US regime. We love being occupied by the savages in the US Marines."

"Good boy."

"if the Dominican people see all Americans as spoiled rich brats"

0000

You will likely be closer to the truth if you attributed somewhat less childish view of "Americans" to the Dominicans.

Adult Dominicans probably see US citizens, for the most part, as either reactionaries, independents, and liberals.

If Dominicans are like most people on earth, they will see US reactionaries, the GOPs, as rogues and animals ... hopeless degenerates while most people entertain a respectful and admiring judgment of US liberals and US independents.

But in the bigoted self-importance of the US reactionary, inflamed with conceit and lies about self, the reactionary and only the reactionary represents and embodies the essence of the US national character.

The revolting US reactionary, not Dominicans, even sees US liberals and independents as weak or "spoiled rich brats"

So, the US reactionary means by "American" only US reactionaries.

People should hate US reactionaries.

GC, the Canadian reactionary, is the self-appointed savior of the USA.

GC's mission has two aims.

(1) To brainwash US independents and US liberals into becoming US reactionaries or, in other words, into GOPs, conservatives, and other forms of beasts and low animals.

(2) To brainwash foreigners who are either indifferent or critical of the imperialist foreign policy of the US regime to become groveling yankeephiles, grinning, scratching their heads, bowing, and tap dancing in front of the US imperialists.

When GC is in front of a US imperialist, say, for example, the lunatic Rev. Pat Robertson ... GC, the quintessential yankeephile, becomes another Fred Astaire or Baryshnikov.

If a foreigner refuses to kiss the behind of an overbearing US reactionary or GOP, the US reactionary says the foreigner hates "Americans."

This is why many foreigners become yankeephiles, spending all their time kissing the behinds of US reactionaries who are only about a third of the US people and who pretend to represent all of the US people or, in other words, all so-called "Americans."

Two-thirds of the US people are not reactionaries and despise reactionaries

Justifiably hating US reactionaries is not the same as hating "Americans."

If humanity retains any decency or self-esteem it must, like two-thirds of the US people, hate the despicable, repulsive, and detestable US reactionaries,GOPs, or conservatives who by war, global warming, HIV-AIDS, world food crisis, and other means are busy exterminating humanity.

This year humanity may lose 50,000,000 lives needlessly from imperialist policies.

I left out off this list one of the biggest means for the extermination, by the US imperialists and their degenerate allies, of a large portion of humanity, this year, .

This biggest means is stealing drinking water.

"People don't have a right to drinking water because water in a commodity that is bought and sold. If somebody buys water, then they have a right to drink, but not because it's water, but because they purchased the commodity called water."

"If people can't buy water that they want, then they have no right and deserve no opportunity to drink. They must do without water, otherwise we will violate the laws of capitalist development."
