SANTO DOMINGO. - Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez favors a constitutional reform with the consensus of all national sectors, whose active participation he said is necessary.

The prelate, regarding the PRSC party’s request to round off the percentage it won in last week’s election, said that he must become what establishes the law without privileging to anybody.

The PRSC won 4.59 percent of the votes and one of its leaders, Ramon Rogelio Genao, asked the Central Electoral Board round it off to 5 percent, the minimum figure needed to access the funds the majority parties receive.

In relation to Miguel Vargas Maldonado’s statement that the opposition PRD will not participate in the consensus the Government seeks with all opposition groups  to confront the country’s problems, the Cardinal said that he respects the former presidential candidate’s position, though noted that the world’s current situation demands that all sectors take part to find solutions.

For once I agree with the Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez,

the world situation is precarious at this time, this crazy escalation of oil prices almost daily,
the preocupation throughout the world with food, and the scarce production of basic food to feed
the world, due in large to that oil prices making impossible for farmers make ends meet, and so many other issues affecting the world population.

However, given the way the PRD have been all this time, the lack of a true leader who sees beyond themselves personal benefits, the fact to have abandon the democratic roots the party was founded 70 years ago, the corruption at all levels they have practiced three times already,
the incapacity of the men that talk stupidities without any new creativity.

They forgot that there are people that remember and judge them for their acts, and still, they offer nothing constructive.

Humm, I find it interesting how the Cardinal states that all sectors must take part in finding solutions, one of those solutions being that the Cardinal himself as well as the church take a backseat in the political arena. They should institute mandatory retirement for Cardinals, and institute mandatory removal if they become too political.

The papers have it all wrong Vargas Maldonado did not say he is against the consensus or that the PRD will refuse to participate, what Vargas Maldonado focus on was on Leonel Fernandez 's lack of political moral for asking such things when it has been the ruling party's own insistance on not taking into account the suggestions made by opposing parties or groups.

I would like to take this opportunity to mourn the passing of Josean and Rubirosa who have been missing for some time.....there have been dark rumors of having run off to California to be together no one knows for sure but their constant bickering will be sorely missed... it is as if only yesterday Josean was here complaining about the metro or as he used to say Metrolandia and then good old Rubi would accuse him of dubious parentage and national origin ah yes nostalgia.....it aint what it used to be...well guys where ever you are good luck and drop us a line

You do not get it poeta25, that man Vargas is fool enough to be focusing one personal attacks about morals to say things,
when himself could also have morals so low, it might never be found even the word around himself,
who is he to acuse another man of not having morals,
when himself have make the most of priviliege governmental positions in the years of the
Hippo, he doesn't have any rights to make accusations, he is at fault too and we all know it.

And another point,
this time is not about personal things between politicians,
this should be about finding the right solutions to not only Dominicans problems of
food and oil prices, the world have the same problems we have,

however, the classic reaction of PRD people is all too well known,
those cannot see beyonf their own pockets.

And having a gastronomic Advisor is helping the Dominican people how? LOL. If all dominican politicians are bad, they are all bad, don't just set aside the PRD as the worse. The PLD is is just as bad if not worse, they are just smarter crooks.

I get it very much, I just don't see Leonel as the solution, Do I see Vargas as a solution, I don't know. But we can't allow politicians to seek too much power within the National Palace, Leonel is is his third term and already sees a possible run at 2012. That in itself is not the meaning of democracy and violates the very principles upon which the PLD was founded.

Poeta25;
Go back to the dictionary, look up "Democracy" and try not to re-define it as you have done.
If the Dominican Constitution is "reformed" to allow for a "4th term" by an incumbent President, that fact has nothing to do with a "violation of the meaning of Democracy". It does, in fact, support such an action, since theConstitution allows it to happen.
Your problem is one of "fallacious reasoning" without the logical incursion into the modus operendi of reforming the Constitution.
Unlike in some other countries, ie., theUSA, the Dominican Constitution is changed solely by the Legislative bodies without referendum to the Provinces and/or the population.
The people have elected their representatives and it is those representatives who have promulgated the changes THEY desire without regard to the desires/considerations of the population.
While that sort of action is permitted under Democracy in a REPUBLIC, it isn't always desirable.
Comment further??

What it comes down to, old buddy, is that the people have given too much of their basic rights and power to too few who have subsequently taken gross advantage of that fact.
This is what happens when too much political power in the hands of a few subverts the intents of the many.
You want a better system?? One that truly benefits poor and rich alike, with equality of all in between? Then cast out the existing Constitution andwrite a new one completely which guarantees the basic rights of all, establishes equality amoung the various provinces, removes the absolute financial control of thePublic Treasury from the Central Government, authorises taxations at the municipal, provencial and federal levels, defining the role of each political division financially, infrastructurally and socially. limit the power of the individual political parties to that of opportunity only in presenting qualified persons for occupation of public office. Establish a comprehensive and fair

Civil service Commission which oversees the testing andplacement of government employees while also establishing the financial remuneration of each level of employment therein. Eliminate the preasent practice of allocating financial subsidies to the various political parties and require them to seek their sources of financing from theprivate sector while limiting the financial contributions by individuals, companies and corporations to any single party.
These actions are necessary in order for the population to regain control of their political destinies and to be able to exercise their basic rights within the political scenario.
However, with the education level being what it is and the understanding, by those same people, of the operations of government, in the DR, I seriously doubt if such could be accomplished.

Poeta, elect yourself, as good or bad you can be, I don't care who, Lionel and the PLD could be
as bad as they come, we know those also are there for the taking,
but I don't care who is the one there,
AS LONG AS IS NOT THE PRD AND ALL THOSE INCOMPETENT MERCENARIES.

If you ask me, my choice right now, would have been Guillermo MOreno without the slighest doubt,
unfortunately, he is starting now, and we must follow him, I think he could be different, there are
other principles in the man.

well,, if this answer your words, see?, took the time to do so.
