SANTO DOMINGO. - The doctors grouped in the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) Wednesday decided to delay the handover of the public hospitals and desist form the strikes in order to give president Leonel Fernandez time to meet their demand of a wage increase and accept their invitation for a dialogue.

CMD president Waldo Ariel Suero said the protests it had been staging for the last several weeks to demand a wage hike of more than 50 percent from the government are suspended for now.

He said their decision comes after the President acknowledged the doctors’ low wages and that their protests aren’t political.

"Because the President has publicly designated an economic commission so it analyzes the health sector’s wage improvement, the Dominican Medical School takes him the President on his word for us to from now implement a specific proposal which improves the living and working conditions," Suero said.

"the President acknowledged the doctors’ low wages and that their protests aren’t political."

Translation: "Lie-onel" Fernandez needs every vote he can get and the doctors who see thousands of people a day might indirectly affect their patients choice for president on My 16th!
