SANTO DOMINGO.- The United States Coast Guard service reports illegal trips by Dominican boatpeople to Puerto Rico fell 67 percent from October 1, 2004 to April 6, 2008.

In a report sent to the Dominican Navy, the Coast Guard said thanks to the collaboration, as many as 88 percent of the yolas with illegal travelers trying to cross the Mona Pass are captured.

Coast Guard statistics show that 11,956 boatpeople were arrested in the crossing to Puerto Rico in 2004; 10,153 in 2005, 7,101 in 2006; only 4,055 in 2007 and in the first three months this year only 805 have been detained, or 67 percent less the same period a year ago.

It praises the Navy for placing what it sees as strict controls, and pledged to continue its support to reduce illegal travel to Puerto Rico and prevent accidents at sea which injure yola passengers.

The joint patrols also prevent drug "airdrops" from airplanes and for which the U.S. donated four speedboats for use in interdiction, in joint operations with other Armed Forces units.

Well... either the coast guards are doing a better job at catching them OR the yoleros are getting smarter about how not to get caught.

The United States Coast Guard is feeding Dominicans to the sharks, like it has done with Haitians for years.

"Do you want to get eaten by a shark? Then let the US Coast guard rescue you?"

"But I'm not Haitian; they're not supposed to feed me to the sharks"

"It doesn't matter what you are as long as you get 'rescued' and the sharks, which prudently follow US Coast Guard vessels, are indiscriminate and insatiable."

SKINNY SHARK: How many did you get?

FAT SHARK: Two. And you?

SKINNY SHARK: About a quarter ... maybe a half ... of one.

FAT SHARK: I told you that the Coast Guard doesn't favor that side of the boat.

(LOL) now that was funny!!! What is more funny is how I do not see that many Dominicans storming this Articles with their divisive comments as they do for other posts. One wonders if this is DR's propaganda or the US's. Something still smell fishy here, well in this case, rather Sharky (LOL).

It's not because the Coast Guard is doing a better job...it's because the economy is doing better and fewer people want to leave the country. Thanks Leonel!! :-)

Actually Dominicans, are starting to realize, the crisis situation in the U.S.,so they are starting to migrate to Europe instead.

It seems to be easier, to travel to Europe, than to travel to the U.S.

U.S. here gives to much of a hassle after Sept 11.

Especially, the Sanky Panky, old or young european women, falls in love with dominican man, and so they fixed there traveling papers.

European countries are also requesting low skill labor, which is a perfect match for the poor:

I guess this means that Leonel will be relieved of a few of its poorer citizens.

The US does not mind if Europeans illegally migrate to American shores. They want to keep America "White". It is the people of color .. the yellow, brown and black skinned that they want to keep out. Those from Asia, Haiti and the Dominican Republic fall into the latter category. Land of the free? Home of the Brave? No more. Forget it. Just stay home and enjoy your own country.

I agree with Sangwong. Do you think they would be whining so much about illegals if they looked Swedish? No way!

Everybody is leaving their home town, thinking the grass is greener on the other side. Some of the Haitians think life on the other side of the island is better, but for some Dominicans sailing to Nueva York is getting closer to the "paradise" :)
Nobody can boast themselves claiming they had found the promise land.

If you read the news that are coming from PR, things are not what they use to be in the island and of course the Dominican that live there are telling the boat people that is not worth it.

In the US your skin color works like a range, the lighter you are the more education, money and power you appear to have. The darker you are the less they expect from you, and the less they want you around. They only want you around if you have something to give, such as cheap labor and home runs.

This is why they don't mind illegal Canadians or Europeans, because they "appear" to have more education, money and power.

Also, historically, lighter humans have been the ones with the most wealth and power.

Oh, and one last note, even though most of us are dark, this range seems to be used here (in the DR) all the time.
