SANTO DOMINGO.- The National Statistics Office (ONE) expects the Dominican population will be 9,884,371 inhabitants for 2010; 272,584 more than the estimate for this year, of 9,611.787.
In addition, the average annual growth rate between 2007 and 2008 is 1.4 for each one 100 inhabitants.
ONE said for 2010 women (4.94 million) will continue being more than men (4.93 million), or 13,807 more.
It said between 2000 and 2025 the average age of the population will increase by almost 7 years (from 22 to 29), which ONE said implies a jump in the senior citizen population, of 65 years of age or older, which went from 5.03 percent in 2000 to 8.63 percent in 2025.

Good news. It means people are living longer and having fewer kids which translates to a better standard of living!

Women control birth rates... Educate women don't have lots of children because it's damaging for their career. So needless to say, if the worlds most populous nations educated their women... we may have a slower birthrate and the planet will not be forced to sustain more than 7 billion people.

Nooooooo! Keep em stupid...... I mean who are you calling stupid?!!
From: United States
This is good news and lower birth rates and living longer are only two elements implying a better standard of living HOWEVER, there are many more other elements which are negative and offset the positive trends noted such as wider income gaps between a few rich and alot of poor people, lack of education, drugs, lack of technology & ESL, infrastructure, basic services (clean drinking water), drugs, addictions, lowering productivity, global un-competitiveness, very ineffective politicians, corrupt judges, weak law enforcement (police & DNCD) ....just to name a few.
So, do not believe the proproganda press releases that will come later about a improved quality of life. The positives only "partially" offset the overall negative trend.

I read the comments here everyday and I have come to the conclusion that there are very few Dominicans that post here. I say that becuase I interact almost daily with a very diverse group of people. and they all love their country their familes and friends.
All this negative energy here is really sad and so are most of the people creating it.
Life is to short and when some one finds the perfect place in this world be sure to let me know.
But for now I am content here.

good for you jander ...you must have a very nice family
From: Dominican Republic
Thank You jander, there are to many foreigners on this site that just write things and have no idea what they are talking about. People who come 2 weeks out of the year for vacation to visit family, friends, beaches and etc.. And think they are experts. There is no perfect country, but this country is perfect for me. What good are you if you abandon your society and government instead of helping out and making it better.

easy to say by a foreigner who doesnt live in dominican republic, or isnt even dominican.
From: Dominican Republic
actually there were all the founding fathers were already born in the island and which makes them natives. So once again foreginer when you come to our country please take time to investigate our culture instead of using wikipedia. You might learn something

Miches,
I would dare say that all foreigners are NOT Dominican...
By the way, I AM Dominican and I am of the opinion that having large families is no longer an advisable lifestyle. The average person would have to trade quality of life for quantity of life. That's just a fact in this day and age.

MM ...do you know what xenophobia is.....MM the great difference between Haiti and DR is that your country has always welcomed all peoples from anywhere with open arms and that is why its diversity is a great strength....Haiti on the other hand since its creation and independence from horrible slavery has been inward looking and paranoid.....this is something they come by honestly out of fear of all the European imperialists who feared the spread of the slave uprising and constantly tried to undermine it from the time of its inception in the colonies of the West Indies.....The slave uprisings did spread to many of the other islands and they were brutally suppressed ....Haiti is now a prisoner of its history and requires a huge rebuilding of its spirit so it can become part of the 21st century like its neighbor the DR.......without people like yourself

The real problem is the birth rate of illegal haitians, it's pretty high. Dominicans are just more consciuos of their decisions.
From: Canada
archie that is because the DR is much more affluent than Haiti

I luv my island and wouldn't change it for any where else in the world. Smaller families, poeple living longer thats great. Two elements for a better standerd of living is better than no improvment. And yes we do have corrupt politicians and law enforcement agencies, ever growing drug problems, poor technology, etc. but so does many other countries that show no improvment at all.

once again people, i didnt say anything about families so Bizc8 you can erase your comment, and gouletcolonial. I was commenting on people who dont even live on the island and are talking garbage. So once again my words are being twisted to fit your insecurities. I never said foreigners shouldnt be on the island or live there. I am commenting on the ones that come for a short period of time, see things that they dont understand and then come on this website and talk garbarge. Thats like someone who comes to your home and meets your family for 5 minutes and then goes back and tells everyone that you are voodoo worshiper because you have an alter to jesus and other saints that go by "different names" when in realty that is not true, its just that the persone came by and assumed what he thought was gold and told everyone like if he was an expert of your house hold. People, you have to read peoples comments before you go up to arms.
