Accounts Chamber, nepotism, blackmail, cronysm...falling saints.
SANTO DOMINGO.- The Accounts Chamber’s (CC) judges increased their personal expenses by RD$113 million, whose initial allocation was RD$162.2 million for 2007, and failed to disclose audits, when made public, "saints would fall from their altar."
The amount reached RD$275.3 million, according to data the CC’s members submitted to the Chamber of Deputies commission which investigates them, for which the entity’s chief internal auditor and comptroller are being questioned.
The lack of transparency by some of the judges continues to come forth and sources quoted by newspaper Diario Libre said the case includes a recording of one of these officials in the middle of blackmailing the Dominican Municipal League.
Another allegation is that the contractor and who remodeled the entire CC office building is a close relative of one of the judges, and that the work was granted without a bidding.
In Contempt of Court
The probe also uncovered that the CC didn’t file charges agaisnt 80 government officials who violated the Law on City Councils, for failing to provide required documents, and in some cases the mayors took these home right when the commission audited those municipalities.
On Tuesday CC judge Jose A. Maceo affirmed that when the results of those audits are made public, "saints would fall from their altar."

Where is the information reported by other newspapers? The judges are planning to raise their salaries from the mere $400,000/month that they steal from us to $850,000. What about the loans that they are planning on giving themselves for millions of pesos? What about the secret account of the 8,000,000 $RD account that the chief of the CC has, but doesn't report on? With regards to Maceo's comment: The fact is that the truth will never come out.

The fact of the matter is that if enough of us care and make our voices heard, there can be change. If our attitude is that this is the way it has always been, and will always be, that becomes a self fullflling prophecy. Too many of us have the attitude that since we are being raped, we should lean back and enjoy it. I for one will fight anyone who attacks me. I would hope that there are many others who will join me.

Every day more details surface about the inner workings of the Chamber of Accounts, which has recently come under fire for suspected misappropriation of funds. Chamber of Accounts members increased personal services costs by RD$113 million. Personal service costs are now at RD$275.3 million. Diario Libre reports that a recording exists of a member of the CA trying to blackmail members of the Dominican Municipal League. Also, DL reports that the remodeling of the CA offices was done by a family member of a CA official. The family member was awarded the remodeling contracts without any public bidding. And yet another twist in the CA saga is that the wife of one of the CA members had applied for a vehicle during the recent presidential election campaign. DL reports that when she didn't receive the vehicle she caused a scene at the CA offices. Officials are also investigating why CA officials didn't investigate 80 government employees who violated Law 10-04. President of the sub-committee

Angel Acosta, said one roadblock for investigators is that some CA members have taken home important documents needed for the investigation. The controversy started when it was revealed that the secretary of the Chamber of Accounts is deaf, and would send his son to take minutes at their meetings. Another case in point was the fact that the chamber members were planning to increase their salaries to RD$550,000 per month (up from RD$400,000), which added to their existing perks would have brought their monthly income to RD$850,000. The Chamber of Accounts was also intending to request a RD$10 million loan to finance their pensions when they finish their term of office.

for all of us who do not understand the severity of the problem, try to realise that there are government SERVANTS ( because that is what they are, even if they do not realise it), who make more money than George Bush, Gordon Brown , et al. if you ask me why, the only reason i can give you is that they are incorrigibly degenerate, have no sense of moral rectitude, and are shameless. i can also tell you that they go on this rampage of the treasure of the country because Dominicans let them. i do not advocate taking matters into one´s own hands, but in some African countries leaders end up wearing Michelin neckties when the citizens have had enough of the buffoonery. it is time for a serious movement in this country to educate the PEOPLE that the government is there to better the country, and not the other way around!! the time for new political thinking is long overdue!!

Ah yes Aristide is famous for his little remark about neckties in Haiti I5 years ago or so
From: United States
actually, i am unaware of that. my understanding of the whole Aristede issue is slim to non-existent. that whole issue is so convoluted and riddled with opportunists that i lost any interest i would have had in studying it. but the necktie thing is prominent in african tribal history. i think we have progressed beyond such barbarities, but we should have some metaphorical equivalent which is equally forceful to deal with these ladrones!

the metaphorical expression for roadside justice in the old west was String Em Up....and Hi....when Roy Bean was asked about hanging for a horsethief he said " I ve met a lot of men that needed hangin but I never saw a horse that needed stealin "
From: United States
yes, but be careful with these expressions, lest you be labelled an aggressor against the peace of the Republic. lord knows the republic could use a swift kick in the ass sometimes, though.
