Rafael Trujillo with Joaquin Balaguer.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- Historians and the public present in the Assembly Hall of Congress oppose returning the assassinated dictator Rafael Trujillo’s remnants back to the country.

Participants in the panel "The Trujillo dictatorship: a view from Democracy," with a strong applause supported the historian Robert Cassa’s position: "That's not necessary; it would be a strange way to bring Trujillo’s remains to the country behind something such as the legitimacy of a very doubtful a reason of tourism."

Cassa there’s no reason to justify the Dominican State to assume the power to reclaim Trujillo’s remains and the fact Dominican democracy has defects "can’t mean legitimizing Trujillo’s tyranny in any sense."

The historian said the country has debts still pending, such as the presence of the remains of former president Pedro Santana in the National Pantheon which should be a topic of debate.

Trujillo's body would indeed be a tourist attraction..I myself would make a pilgrimage to defecate on it annually. If someone out there is indeed drawing up plans for a mausoleum for Trujillo's remains to be interred on Dominican soil then please make sure to include a toilet paper dispenser.

Yes, that is Juaquin Balaguer :). I don't see why not bring Trujillo's remains back to his country. Like him or not, he's part of us, our history.

El Jefe you make a good point and it will probably happen but later than sooner.....In the meantime where is Porfirio Rubirosa buried ....bring his remains back, now thats a good tourist attraction just think he did to all those women what El Jefe did to the country.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWrKgOwP5TM..........if El Jefe had resigned 5 years before his assassination there would be statues of him today....he stayed to long at the ball and he got taken out for Betancourt ,Galindez and the Mirabal sisters etc.

There are a lot of villians equal to or worse then Trujillo that are buried in Dominican Republic, including local citizens not only politicians. Having his body here shouldnt be a problem. He is part of our history wheither we like it or not. If we erase our past we erase who we are and what we became. Besides if they can build a muesuem for Balaguer and still have his body here then there should be no problem to restore his house in san cristobal and keep his remains. I went to Trujillos house not to long ago, and its a mess. They started reconstruction to fix it and then they abdandoned it, and left a family there to baby sit the house. But people from all over the world still come any way to see the house the lady said, even people from Japan. I tell you its one hell of a feeling to be in the same room he slept in, seeing the same closet that was in fotos filled with shoes, and looking at the mirror he used. Makes you wonder what was going through his mind when he looked at himself

For those that don't know where he is, he was taken to the famous Père-Lachaise in Paris. He was then later taken to the family tomb in Madrid where he still resides. Some of the family still live in and around Madrid. I'm not too bothered what happens to his remains, as he won't be forgotten, where ever his remains are. He is a huge character in a fascinating history, like him or not.

As for Rubirosa, not sure he needs a national monument or anything like that, what did he do?
Maybe a huge column would be fitting.

To do that would be giving legitimacy to his autocratic regime, Yes, he is part of our history as part of our history are those upon whom he built his empire. Trujillo was an evil man and you should not consagrate him. The country already have to many people like him that would love to take the country under their wins and make it their personal "finca" TRUJILLO a tourist attraction? that will be forgetting our history, then again, we forgott Balaguer's role on Trujillo's regime and we forgave Balaguer for his 12 years of terror.
"restore LA CAS DE CAOBA, bring back his clothing, his shoes, his hats his gloves. Decorate a room with pictures of all the young girls that lost their virginity while the orquesta Santa Cecilia plays loas in the background, decorate the the garden with La silla electrica de la 40 and put a big sign in the front QUE VIVA EL JEFE CARAJO!

El Difuntissimo. If they want to bury Trujillo in DR I have an unused latrine in the back of our property in Baitoa that I would like to donate as a burial spot. For free. We might have to stuff him in there upright but I'm sure that there's enough room. If that were to happen then I'd definitely start using said latrine again.
