PUNCA CANA, Dominican Republic-. The entomologist and biologist Edward Osborne Wilson yesterday said to preserve the biodiversity the country must improve the protection of its protected areas and create new ones, more specifically, implement the management plans if these zones with great ecological potential. “Many of the country’s parks have national park or protected area status but lack the resources and capacity to really implement plans to protect them."
The scientist -whose many studies in the country include its biodiversity- term which he created- said those plans protects the hydraulic resources and makes it possible to develop new medicines.
Wilson, whose extensive study of ants has won him two Pulitzer prizes, was the researcher who solved the mysterious plague of ants which forced the Spaniards to move the city of Santo Domingo at the start of 1500. He determined that the species was the fire ant, brought from the Canary Islands.
Invited by the Punta Cana Group Ecological Foundation, the expert presented documentary Wednesday night on his life and his contributions to humanity, to mark World Environment Day today.
