Santo Domingo.- The owner of the city’s Hotel San Geronimo Yvan Cech and his wife Yasmin de la Cruz confessed to the Quebec, Canada Prosecutor that his properties in Dominican Republic are products of crime.

Cech was extradited after his arrest in the country last year, to face criminal charges in Canada, where’s he was wanted since May 3, 2006.

The Canadian’s other properties include buildings, the company Hoteleria Dominicana and lots worth more than RD$100 million, and told the prosecutor he waives all rights to those assets.

"I, Yvan Cech, admit owning the property described above and as such having used the company which conducts matters under the name Hoteleria Dominicana," and agreed to have the Quebec Prosecutor confiscate them.

His wife

Under questioning Yasmin de la Cruz Dominguez admitted to being the figurehead of the company Hotelia Dominicana, said to be owned by Cech.

Will the Dominican prosecutors begin criminal proceedings for alleged crimes in the DR against this guy and his old lady, and then confiscate those DR properties, worth a cool RD $100 M, before the Canadians snatch them and later the prosecutors can try to snatch what the criminal couple may own in Canada?

Even if the DR prosecutors get only the DR properties, they should be happy because RD$ 100 M is a good chunk of money.

Nothing to be ashamed of.

Can someone illustrate on the legal part of this matter....the question is,
Is it legal in DR to buy properties with dirty money?
In other words, does DR allow money laundry?

If they don't, the money belongs to the state.

I would guess that mr Cech brought the funds here from Canada where they were acquired illegally thus making them subject to confiscation in Canada by the Crown.....on the other hand if his criminal enterprise was mostly located in the DR that would be another matter...But that does not appear to be the case

i hate to say this, lest i be accused of being anti-foreigner, but this country has become a mecca for money launderers. as any intelligence report can attest to, real estate is where the laundromats are currently hiding the ill gotten gains. with the ease with which foreigners can buy property here, it is not surprising. this has got to be one of the only places on earth with more foreign real estate agents than local ones. go figure!! couple that with the lack of a functioning financial intelligence department, and what can you expect?

this is true again Dread..... your batting average is improving....but it is very hard to distinguish the soiled from the clean and we would not want to throw out the baby with the bath water......If licensing of real estate agents would be anything like the licensing of our tour guides we are much better off without licenses and leaving the field open

actually , Goulet, every guy who lost his job or went bust in a venture simply starts selling real estate. every other guy who does not even have a cedula is involved in selling properties here. the whole business is an inregulated mess, and a haven for undesirables with dirty money. it is not a state secret. there are legit foreigners, but, with no oversight, the thing is out of control. why do you think trinidad put a stop to these unbridled real estate transactions? they could use the money too, but they calculated the risk. with the money laundering comes the drug gangs, and down goes the neighborhood. just ask the folks who are scared to walk the streets of Sosua after the sun sets.

Sorry dread TT is not yet on the radar as a second home community like Costa Rica or Panama or the Dominican Republic let alone PR or USVI .....dont fix it if it aint broke ...You would just be inviting in another corrupt big government agency ......The DR does not need to go down that road yet

It's very simple. Any RE transaction needs to go through the government tax system, thus creating some jobs for the locals. We just need to implement more red tape in order to determine the money is not coming from illegal means.
