SANTO DOMINGO.- The head of the United States Army Southern Command yesterday said its collaboration with the Dominican Armed Forces will be expanded to fight the trafficking of drugs, guns and illegal immigrants.

General Keith M. Huber announced the U.S.’ commitment to fight those and other threats which the region’s countries face. " We’re available now and in the future taking any opportunity to be at your side during the multidimensional threats,  natural disasters and against illicit traffic; we’re here, we’re families to protect innocents and our peoples."

Huber made his statements during a visit with Dominican Armed Forces minister general Ramon Aquino.

Yes another battle in the "war on drugs" .. so what's the score? who's winning? it's like trying to bail out the entire North Atlantic using a tea cup .. you bail .. you bail .. you bail some more .. nada ..

The DR would certainly have an advantage over the druggies by takng advantage of this offer from the Southern Command.
Amoung the advantages could be mobile AC&W radar nets, deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance and interception of incoming "unknown traffic", both by air and by sea.
The Southern Command has a lot of equipment at it's disposal, and is capable of transporting such quickly to anyplace in the Caribbean Basin should the need arise.
It would behoove the Dominican Authorities to study their needs and make the requests for assistance ASAP if they are sincere in combatting the incoming Druggies.

I just hope the dope smugglers find new routes up to Miami and New York .. this is killing us down here .. we will turn into San Juan PR .. where the drug wars are taking an enormous toll .. we also need to work on curbing appetites up north .. more drug abuse programs .. if we can afford it of course .. but why are they using so much up north? what's the problem?

Southern Command has stocks for deployment to international disasters.
That is good help after a bad storm.
Ironically the system is set up to help other nations in the Americas better than New
Orleans, but that is what exists.
Close relations with South Com is good, it won't hurt and can be a big help if needed.

It's always like that .. the US does a great job of feeding starving kids in Somalia .. but has a tough time sending shipments of food to the Appalachian foothills. Hard to believe, but George Bush is actually more popular in Tanzania than the President of Tanzania. Go figure. If George ran for President in Tanzania he would win by a landslide. Go figure.

We need a new and creative approach to this problem of intercepting Colombian drugs bound for their final destinations in the United States .. in addition to "Plan Colombia" and the "Coca Eradication Programs" the drugs could be purchased wholesale and destroyed at the source before they even leave Colombia .. it sounds hare brained I know .. but the point is that we have to come up with something that is significantly better than all this futile cops and robbers stuff .. otherwise it's back to bailing out the Atlantic with a teacup .. We also need a radical way to tackle the problem at the destination .. in the US .. it may require a major suspension of individual rights .. but this is a "war" .. is it not?
