SANTO DOMINGO. - Luis Alvarez Renta, one of four convicted of fraud in the Baninter bank case and considered one of the country’s wealthiest financiers, turned himself in Thursday to Sentencing judge Saulo Ysabel Diaz.

It was reported that Alvarez Renta, who arrived accompanied by his lawyers, would be sent to the prison at Najayo, San Cristóbal (south), at around 5 p.m.

The other convicts in the case, former Baniniter president Ramon Báez Figueroa and Marcos Báez Cocco were also sent to that prison Wednesday night, after appearing before the judge at 2 p.m.

On Friday the Supreme Court upheld the National Distric Cour of Appeals verdict on a challenge filed by the lawyers of the Central Bank, the plaintiff, as well as by those of the defendants in case.

This is the deal, someone has to face the public and it will not be the government cause we are untouchable. Previous administrations are out of the questions and the Central Bank will not be pushed into such scandals. So lets take the biggest head along with all the other smaller ones and for a while lets play jailed time, we will showed you as an example that this kind of behaviour will not be tolarated and that in D.R. peoples money is protected. For now you can keep it all since we don't have any proof as to how much is yours sice you are very wealthy. So, whose to judge the judges -- that is the government -- how much do they steal each and everyday. Thieves prosecuting thieves. They are probably saying that they got to start somewhere but thats the same old story. The government steals legally and the government are the high officials on down to those that are receiving monthly checks for doing nothing but them again politicians do nothing as well. How much truth do you know.

walter polo
what!!!!
based on what...the money he wired to his fake business in florida?
he has a fiduciary duty to the investors who placed their trust and savings in the bank, while this piece of garbage enriched himself with hard earned money from the dominican people. here is where the corporate veil should be torn and the government should step in and show by selling his precious assets that there is real punishment for the destruction, and depletion of their institutions.
this man will go jail but his money will be intact? that is not justice, explain that to the people who lost their savings and were not and will not be re-instituted.

Goulet, i have no idea what kind of object lessons you might be alluding to in my case. i think you are confusing me with someone else. i am the guy who rails against people who enrich themselves at the expense of others, remember? i am the guy you like to call a socialist and commie. this is a capitalist swine of the worst order, whose morality is more in line with yours, not mine.

Ed Asner is going to jail.
Does anyone know what the conditions in Nayajo prison are? And for how long is this Alvarez Renta guy going away for? The article says nothing of the length of his sentence.
