Santo Domingo.– All shipments coming from Haiti will be fumigated as part of an initiative to prevent the spread of a carnivorous ant outbreak that has been reported in border areas.

According to Agriculture Minister Salvador Jimenez, the ant, the Paratrechina (Hymenoptera formicidae), is a very aggressive ant that attacks crops and livestock.

Government officials have known about the outbreak for three months and have helped the Haitian authorities identify the plague, Jimenez said. Several international organizations are taking part in the fumigation project.

Its common knowledge that most of the aid given to Haiti is quickly shipped to the border and sold off in the markets. Those famous "pacas" that are sold in places such as Pueblo Nuevo in Santiago are aid packages for the Haitian people. Haitian society is beyond hand outs because of the massive corruption that permeates every layer of their society. It really bothers me to see so much chaos and no one seems to give a rat's a.. about it. I have some Haitian friends and for some reason this is a very thorny subject. The rich just go about with their lavish lifestyles and the poor eat dirt.

I have read reports of donated food deteriorating in Port-au-Prince warehouses .. because there is no system in place to distribute the items .. and I would not be surprised that food donated to Haiti is being sold for profit in the DR .. this happens pretty much everywhere there is donated food .. but the impact is much worse for a country like Haiti ..

You want to know how corrupted Haiti is? We sent free food and equipment to Haiti and they had the nerve to charge us custom dues!!! The people controlling the ports are extremely corrupted. All of you are right, the free aid that is given to them are turned into profit by selling it to DR. It does not mean that DR is a saint either because they are obviously buying goods that they know are aid to to the poor Haitians. At this point, it would be better if a major power would go into Haiti, take over the place, build infrastructure and later on open up the border and make it a free spirited place like St. Martin/St. Marteen. It is one small island. Why should it be divided? Of course, we all know that Haitians and Dominicans do not like each other, which to me is stupid because most of the entire island is black. Although Dominicans would love their side of the island to be whithened completely. The corruption in Haiti need sto be stopped and foreign investors shoul b invited.
