The presence of Haitian children has grown in the major cities.

NEW YORK. - Several New York-based international organizations yesterday picketed in front of the Dominican consulate, to protest the alleged mistreatment of Haitian immigrants who live and work in the Dominican Republic, newspaper Diario Libre says.

Representatives of the organizations Grassroothaiti, Haitian Solidarity Committee and the Dominican-Haitian Solidarity Network among them, voiced slogans against the Dominican government and handed out flyers and other materials denouncing the situation of "slavery and “denial" of the rights of Haitians in the neighboring Caribbean country.

From before 5 p.m. the activists began to gather at 1501 Brodway, site of the Dominican consular offices chanting “Dominican government stop mistreating our workers and inmigrants."

The protesters unsuccessfully tried to hand their demands to a Dominican government representative, including a migratory amnesty, a halt to the deportations and the alleged mistreatment of Haitians.

Estimates of the number of Haitians currently in the Dominican Republic range from 700,000 to as high as more than one million, a situation Immigration director Carlos Amarante called "untenable" a few days ago.

Recently the Jesuit priests who work with the Haitians along the northern border area around Dajabón denounced a trafficking of Haitian children to Dominican side, at a cost of four dollars each.

The ones making a big deal out of this event is the dominican media, no one else cares. I don't see anything else online about it.

From what I have read on the news, this picket was carried out by the people that is the object of your detestation, goulet: bleeding heart lefties of the grassy knoll, in short, commie foreigners that seem to enjoy magnifying the ills of a given country, just for the sake of it, and whose solutions are proven to be worse than the illness itself.

Speaking of which, I find it strange that your dear "friend" from the dark side a.k.a Darth Belial hasn't shown himself yet, along with his apprentice Z-man from Zimbabwe, talking about the "benefits" of living in a workers' paradise the former, with the latter dealing the slimy race card from the bottom of the deck, as always. LOL

I have now changed the slimy race card to the slimy domino as a concession to local culture and the manner it is usually slammed on the table

The problems for the Haitian people is not the D.R. The present government of Haiti and internal Haiti is the problem but no one is showing these conditions on the Haitian side so they rather present another country as if that country is responsible for them. Humans rights groups are a bunch of ignorance no good for nothing. If they care so much about it them why don't they bring them to the U.S. free of charge. Haitians leave Haiti cause of the treatments that they received from their own fellowed country men. They entered the D.R. in hopes that there they made get to eat a little if not at least something other then mugged cookies. Throwing the responsability on another country is a cowardly act and those who take part in the charade are just as guilty. Go to the HEART OF THE PROBLEM == HAITI.

Legal residents should have rights but now even that is in question wit the cedula and residency card forgery.

Basically illegal is illegal and other then human rights issues this demonstration is an execise in futility.

Rather then walking around with a sign in their hands perhaps rolling up their sleeves and helping their country with it's internal problems would be more rewarding.

Why hold a protest on a day of national celebration, a day when no one watches news on TV,and if they do, the only stories are about the 4th of July, fireworks and hot dog eating contests. Not the best decesion.
