Santo Domingo .- Dominican Republic’s progress in international connectivity got a boost with a new submarine cable between Puerto Plata and Jamaica, approved by the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel.)
Indotel director Jose Rafael Vargas said recent announcements made by the Columbus Netwoord, majority owners of the cable Arcos 1, built an extension of its cable to link with NAP of the Caribbean, in Santo Domingo.
Vargas spoke during an activity headed by president Leonel Fernandez, held at the Embajador Hotel in Santo Domingo.

"Between Puerto Plata and Jamaica?"
Huh?
"Wasn't the shortest route between 2 points a straight line ??"
Good question.
The Venezuelans are laying a cable from Venezuela to Santiago de Cuba in Cuba and there has been talk about an extension or branch off to Jamaica.
Now, the Jamaicans get an offer of a link "between Puerto Plata and Jamaica?"
Is this for real?
Great for shorter distances and easy to deploy.
But when there is water in between fiber is still the best solution we have.
SPEED: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds - up into the gigabits
• BANDWIDTH: large carrying capacity
• DISTANCE: Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be "refreshed" or strengthened.
• RESISTANCE: Greater resistance to electromagnetic noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables.
• MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs much less to maintain
oooo
It could be either case.
The brotherly possibility has a certain ring about it, but who knows?
But Puerto Plata still seems bizarre as a point of departure for a line to Jamaica.
My guess is the DRs aren't even thinking about a line to Jamaica and couldn't care less about one.
But the DRs want to placate the US imperialists before the USAs invade and occupy the DR again.
So, the DRs make a ridiculous Puerto Plata offer to the Jamaicans.
Thus, the DRs achieve two things. They postpone the next imperialist invasion and inform the Jamaicans that offer is bogus.
