President Fernandez in the inaugural of the 2007-2008 schoolyear.
SANTO DOMINGO.- The 2008-09 school year begins for around 2.7 million students today, and 663,000 of the total are enrolled in the country’s private schools.
President Leonel Fernandez and the newly appointed Education minister Melanio Paredes will be present in the ceremony to begin classes, slated for the Francisco del Rosario Sanchez education center, in Boca Chica.

The fact is that our education system is a disgrace. Students are in school for between 3 and 4 1/2 hours per day. This does not take into account the time spent at play or eating. They probably get 2 hours per day of instruction from underpaid, uninterested teachers, who's only concern (rightfully so) is how are they going to feed their families on the pittance they receive.
At least Leonel changed the Secretary of Education for someone who had the nerve to stand up to the gangster unions in the Chevron debacle. I hope that he brings the same desire to do the right thing to his new post.

The sad part is, how many of the kids heading off for the 4 hours of school are going this first day without the supplies they need. No notebooks, pencils, etc. Like a previous article says the basic wage does not cover the needs of the populace in regards to food, shelter & clothing.
From: United States
It is time for the DR government to step in and subsidize educational supplies. This problem is also happening with increasing frequency in many other parts of the world. American teachers often have to dip into their OWN POCKETS to buy school supplies for their students. It is a hardship for many teachers.
From: United States
This problem of supplies in US schools has reared it's ugly head in WV, NY, FL .. the list of STATES, COUNTIES, CITIES, SCHOOL DISTRICTS may be quite large. It's not exactly the kind of problem that anybody would want to be widely reported. Quite embarassing if you asked me. Here is an August 16, 2008 report appearing in a South Florida paper. You may need to COPY and PASTE .. join both lines in the link into the URL section of your browser if clicking on it FAILS.

EMBARASSING INDEED .. I mean here we are hammering on the DR for not having enough school supplies for the kiddies .. yet we have one of the most powerful nations on earth .. capable of destroying all the 4 corners of the world .. capable of making and delivering PRECISION BOMBS to all 4 corners of the world .. and their TEACHERS have to pay for SCHOOL SUPPLIES out of THEIR OWN MEAGER EARNINGS? Shame. Shame. Shame. Let's stop BEATING ABOUT THE BUSH. Divert those BILLIONS from the WARS. Give it to our POOR KIDDIES. Please?

Herr Doktor Johann .. we discussed the near COMATOSE condition of the US education system at the PRIMARY and SECONDARY school level last night .. you know how bad it is .. maybe we should try to NOT be SO HARD on the DR EDUCATION SYSTEM. Particulary if we have made a HORRIFIC MESS of OUR OWN. Jawohl Herr Doktor Johann?

DR was ranked one pf the worst.... One thing you can say about comies is that they are well educated ..

The US public school system is in bad shape too .. if the DR is trying to emulate those in the US .. they are headed down the SAME DRAIN.
From: Cuba, it is a secret the censors are looking for me
that is a drain they should be fighting to go down....the one they are circling now is far worse
