SANTO DOMINGO. – The three most scandalous cases during the Administration which just concluded were the US$130 million Sun Land loan, the “little payrolls” and the quality of the milk in the school breakfast.
Newspaper El Dia reports that the political opposition as well as civil society organizations say they are cases of corruption, and that it was the use and abuse of of taxpayers’ money to benefit the ruling party. Even the United States ambassador, the Socialist International and the European Union representatives commented on them.
However the Government and the ruling PLD party defended through thick and thin their actions as legitimate, disqualifying the opposition and turning a deaf ear to the critics.
The Sun Land case is still pending a verdict on an appeal as unconstitutional, filed by the Alternative Social Forum and the opposition PRD party against the contract signed by the Government with the Canadian company Sun Land, to build several works.
The Executive Branch is questioned for starting to execute a US$132 million loan without Congress’ approval, in violation of the law, prompting several organizations to criticize the Supreme Court’s foot-dragging on the case.
“When contracts of this nature are done it’s because they want to hide something,” said the director of the Dominican Alliance Against Corruption Julio Cesar de la Rosa.
Civil society organizations also say the “little payrolls” to pay the members of the party in power is the most scandalous use of taxpayers’ money in the history of Dominican democracy.
El Dia asks “milk or water?”
Public opinion was caught by surprise with the allegation that the milk used in the school breakfast by far has less protein than the contracts with suppliers stipulate. The scandal led to yet another bout between former Education minister Alejandrina German and the press, as many believe finally prompted president Leonel Fernandez to remove her from that post.

Canada ambassador Patricia Fortier, in a letter emailed to Dominican Today, denied that Sun Land is a Canadian company.

Same old Same old "Blame Game" No one takes responsibility for their mistakes anymore.
People can relate to human error and bad judgement but aren't so keen when they know they are listening to plain old BS. This guy could win some confidence back if he would just admit that he hasn't lived up to his promises and vow to do better.
This new United States ambassador, doesn't have any room to criticize he is so out of touch and is affectionately called "Dad" by his collegues at the embassy. He doesn't belong here he should finishing out his career in a country with no problems. Like Norway , but I am sure it was to cold for his old bones.
