Santo Domingo.- The senators will debate the US$93 million loan contract to buy the Super Tucano patrol planes in the next few days, said PLD party senators spokesman Luis René Canaán.

He said it’s time that the Senate debates the international credit to purchase the eight airplanes, from the Brazilian company Embraer. "We in the Senate understand that not only the approval of this contract is important, but also the bill on marine and aerial interception, with the acquisition of speedboats and radars, to fight the traffic of guns, drugs and people, that is to say a complete package, to fight those crimes."

Canaán said the work has been delayed by the need to choose new commissions after August 16, but once ratified it wouldn’t be any inconvenience to debate the bill before the terms of the loan expire in September.

Many of us here insist and agree on how the government should focus on corruption and the fight against drug and human trafficking, yet these are consequences of the lack of control of airspace and virtually no control of national waters. Yes, invest on schools. Yes, invest against corruption and the fight on drugs, but the fact is that trying to cure a disease is much more expensive and harder to control than vaccinating the country against drugs. Drugs = money laundering = corruption=crime=drug addicts.
What are good schools good for if the population is being bombarded with drugs? So, I still don't see how come some of us here don't agree on the purchase of these planes if this will have an immediate and long term positive effect on the population.

The purchase of the RE-vamped Mustang P-51's:
It's escapes me on how having propeller fighter planes could benefit the interdiction of drugs crossing or being conducted on Dominican territoty. As quiet as it's kept, that's what the DEA, the U.S. Coast Guard, and a number of other U.S. entities do; Patrol the whole Caribbean region, point blank. You can't have conflicting jurisdictions in the airwaves when the U.S. claims them as theirs. Remember, Iran Contra affair? There were obviously many scheduled drug flights. And who could've stopped them? FAD? Well, if the U.S. Controls the whole Caribbean basin; Who else can patrol these skies? No one! Now, if the DR insists on purchasing these 1950 technology flying dinosaurs they might be to maintain it's own population surveilled, but not for stopping drug trafficking. This will not, and can not be impeded by the DR, or any other party. This is big business, and you can't jeopardize billions of dollars; TOP SECRET.....

Debate, Hmh? The U.S. is going to give you $93M to buy prop jobs, and cardinal Nicolas is in favor of even firing at any plane flying over DR skies, even U.S. planes (objected by U.S. diplomats) if need be? "Eso, ni se lo creen ustedes mismo." There's something fishy about this whole much ado about nothing.....I smell a $93M rat. This money is earmarked for Tucanos...I think they taking the people for Toucans...The bird with the long beak. Yes, this whole exercise is strictly for the birds. So, let the bi-cameral congress waste the people's time! Tempus fugit!

Lopez said the Dominican side of the border with Haiti is practically unprotected and the controls need to be doubled, even if the United States opposes the downing of airplanes. "The United States cannot speak much, because it doesn’t want the country to address the matter, especially the topic of the airplanes."
