SANTO DOMINGO. - Triumphant, but sportingly humble, the Olympic heroes Felix Diaz, gold medal winner in boxing and Gabriel Mercedes, silver medal in taekwondo in the Peking Games, arrived in Dominican Republic Tuesday afternoon, and received by a throng that defied the nasty weather left by Hurricane Gustav.

“I say to my brother Felix Diaz that we receive all these triumphs and recognitions with humility, so that we enjoy them next to our families and our friends where we come from, but we should always be humble and simple,” Mercedes said upon arriving at the Las Americas Airport.

I am 60 plus years old. I have just gone into training as a boxer. I hope to win the gold medal in 2012 since that appears to be the only way to get my street paved.
