SANTO DOMINGO.- "I was ripped off," said a minority party leader in the National Palace last night, in the latest scandal affecting president Leonel Fernandez’s designations, which led the TV producer Cesar Medina a close supporter of the Head of State, to question his leadership.
Last week former Education minister Alejandrina German at first hesitated in taking her post after being named in the Ministry of Women, and then former vice president Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal's refusal to accept the reigns of the Environment Ministry, and who reportedly sent the chief executive a “short list” with possible substitutes.
PRN party president Agustín Montero complained because despite being promised the designation as head of the Price Stabilization Institute (Inespre), Fernandez designated someone else instead.
He said he couldn’t speak with Fernandez to discuss the situation, which he blamed on the ruling PLD party commission designated to negotiate with the leaders of the parties allied with the PLD to support the re-election.
"This is a rip-off. In the United States they rip you off with drugs and here there are rip-offs with the political parties, with decrees for designations, because for us the designation was official. In fact all the leaders of the party were aware that I was going to Inespre," he said
Montero, who took part in a similar scandal in 1996 when Fernandez tapped him as head of the Dominican Red Cross and its ousted director refused to step down, said his interest in the post is because Inespre, "is completely destroyed and our intention is to clean it up."

I guess the thing that really floors me is that these folks have a government appointed position and when re-appointed (with appointed being the key word) they refuse to transfer to the new job. Then they have the audacity to complain about not being appointed to a ministry or post that they desire. This actually shows how devoted and concerned they are to the welfare of the Dominican poeple and government functioning as it should.

GC,
I know. Just like in Venz. today there are some employees demanding that the companies they work for to be nationalized as well. The issue they dont see is that, you make the same money, no difference in benefits, cost of goods do not go down, and the government unlike a private owned business CAN close its doors. WOW what a deal.
You look like your drunk, let me hold your money.!!!!!!!!!

Dominican Elected Officials, among the world’s most highly paid
SANTO DOMINGO.- The wages paid to Dominican legislators, plus the increase the senators seek, place them at the level of lawmakers of large countries, including those of Europe, considered among the world’s most expensive, according to a report by the newspaper Diario Libre published today.
A basic salary of 125,000 pesos monthly, 50,000 in perks, 25,000 in per diem and another 3,500 pesos per session totals RD$203,500 (US$6,166 at the 33 pesos per dollar rate).
Added to that monthly total is a Provincial Management Fund (“the little barrel) from RD$400,000 to 900,000, placed at their discretion.
If the senators get the increase they seek their salary would reach 250,000, with another 125,000 pesos to what they’re currently paid, the total would then be at least 1.22 million pesos monthly (US$37,227).

why, BenCardozo, whatever do you mean when you say it is unreal? au contraire, mon frere; it is par for the course. how do you think government ministers manage to buy 60 million peso mansions? these are just legislators. think of how much the real heavyweights make, multiply that by 20 to account for the COMISIONS, and you will get the full meaning of the term "earning power".

Weird. One would think people would have to apply for the job and the best person would be chosen among the candidates. People should work in the area of their experience, interest, passion and preference, in order to do a good job. I never before was aware that these designations were made by the president without consulting the people themselfs...

He's lucky he's still got a job!
What do you mean you were ripped off, like in the US?
There's nobody gettin' ripped off in DR?
El Pueblo Dominicano--is constanly getting ripped-off.
The biggest rip-off is the fish mongers that I constantly see holding responsible positions, and jobs that can be awarded to more qualified candidates. But, when you rise to power promising ruffians, and wise guys a piece of the action; What do you expect?
Civil Service exams should be instituted to ensure that best person gets the government jobs.
However, jobs that are appointed are unfortunately the responsibility of the winning President and his party. So, those administrators are a reflection of that president, and party. "All the president's men". "Segun el palo, la astilla"!
