SANTO DOMINGO.- The United States Embassy donated 1.4 million pesos for the restoration of the Santo Domingo Cathedral’s altar, as part of a fund for cultural preservation.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez thanked the U.S. for the donation obtained through ambassador Robert Fannin, who said the temple’s colonial architecture impressed him when he arrived in the country.

With the money, the Archdiocese will restore the "altarpiece’s Holy Relic," located in a secondary altar, that contains a pieces and a statue considered scared. Its baroque style combines architecture, sculpture, with techniques and polychromic gold inlays, that reveal deterioration.

Maybe the good Cardinal will convince Lionel to buy F-16's instead of the Super-Tucanos.

Should'nt that be the responsibility of the Catholic Church (Rome)? even after all the lawsuits, they must have some money left.

Accepting money for the resotoration shows the lack of pride that the leonel government and cardinal lopez have for their national and religios heritage.

Clearly, the RD has no greater ally than the US Gov. It is too bad there is no reciprocity. The US & Canada send tourist, hard currency, investments & aid while the RD Gov helps to send back drugs and increased crime! I guess there is NO honor among thieves (i.e. RD Gov).

It would be great if Fannin actually did something more worthwhile such as campaigning against corruption, drugs, RD Gov corruption, initiating or threatening an economic boycott, help US companies get established in the RD (such as Wal-Mart) so poor Dominicans could get more free enterprise from improved competition via the DR-CAFTA.

I guess Fannin has looked in the mirror and told himself he is doing a great job (as drugs come to the US via the RD). Americans still can not get through to the Embassy for assistance unless you are Secretary Rice.

It is the same old crap ...but just a different ambassador. Dominican youth still fight off drug dealers in Los Platanitos (Ensanche Caonaobo) in Santiago!

It's appropriate that you should mention that! It's odd that a US ambassador is handing money for preservation of Religious antiquities. Not that I don't agreee that the renovation of the cathedral's altar is not warranted, or that it's not important. This is part of the nation's history.
What seems strange is that the US Embassy donates funds for the rehabilitation of a religious building. As you so aptly pointed out; Where's the separation of Church and State. Well, in DR, there is no separation; the state is the church, and vice versa. There's a porous membrane between them. The law of the land is the church...as quiet as it's kept.
What is surprising is the advances that the Roman Church has made in the US. Did you see all the Pomp and fanfare they put on for Benedict 16? Wash, DC. Ground Zero; Yankee Stadium; It isn't WASP no more! It's 'LATIN', now

actually Arsenio, there was a time when Yankee Stadium was reportedly owned by the Catholic Church. if not the stadium itself, the land it was built on.

For your information Dreadlocks;
NYC is the seat of the US's Catholic See (RCC).
The Cardinal of the NY ArchDiocese (Eagan) is the American Pope; Though recently that rule (it's debatable who's in charge) has rather been revised since Wiliam Levada, previously Bishop of San Francisco, Calif., was elevated to Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine ('The old', Office of the Inquisition). But, yes the Catholic Church owns considelable real estate in NY, and throughout the US. It's not really a church; It's a secret multinational organzation that interfaces with business, politics, banking, mining, labor, and religions. They are the dynamic force behind the New World Order, North American Union, The E.U., Mercosur, The ASEAN states, etc.
It's just amazing that until recently it (RCC) never openly flaunted its influence; 'Til now!

thanks for the info, Arsenio. i am short on specifics, but i know that a considerable amount of real estate north of 96th ST in NYC was, or is, owned by the Catholic Church. that includes Columbia University.
