Rikers Island, "home" to many Dominicans in the U.S. Phot oic.sunysb.edu

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Government rejected a United States proposal to allow Dominicans who’ve been convicted of drug trafficking and other crimes there to serve their sentences in the Dominican jails and vice versa, despite having similar agreements with Spain and Canada, among others.

The refusal, adopted by the Justice Ministry in representation of the Dominican State, was transacted to the U.S. embassy via the Foreign minister Carlos Morales Troncoso.

In a 2-page statement, the Justice Ministry says there’s no physical space to receive the estimated 6,000 inmates of Dominican origin now in U.S. prisons, and add them to the 15,000 currently in correctional facilities.

It said the country’s 35 penitentiaries don’t have the security systems required to keep the convicts who arrive, “from continuing to manage their businesses related to organized crime from inside the jail.”

Depends if the agreement would be prisoners in State custody or just federal prison. The 6,000 # seems to be just federal.
But Rikers`Island is a NYC (County) facilty unless that is just a photo of a USA jail.
It would put some pressure on Govt types if they knew they would be sent to USA prison. Specially the miltary type.,

That will be good with the condition that the US cover all expenses and build new jails to house other criminal in the DR. That include building new jails and remodeling the ones already built. With that agreement the DR will have $0 expenses in building and maintaining all jails in the country.

Clearly, the US knows the RD Gov can NOT be trusted. Just recently, a Dominican inmate who was suppose to be serving prison time was out for a long time with a prison guard having ice cold Presidente's and chasing chicas as read about her on DT.com.

Why should we assume that the RD Gov would be any different when they can not manage the criminals the already have in the RD.

After Dominicans serve US prison time they are extradicted in chains back to the RD & turned over to DNCD - police for processing. The criminals are checked in & sent back home to their Dominican mothers homes to eat platanos & san cocho...Now re-organized crime is at an all time high & criminals control the streets whereas criminals now also included corrupted DNCD agents and police. Extradicted criminals have partnerships with Santiago police in my barrio of Los Platanitos (Ensanche Caonabo). It is a very pathetic where the 5% who are Tigres have the other 95% living in fear! Que Vida!

Everybody knows that in the DR you can buy your liberty. If you have the cash, you don't have to stay in jail for too long, even if you are Pablo Escobar...
