Joaquin Balalguer's PRSC held office for a record 5 terms.
SANTO DOMINGO.- The positions of the leaders and ex leaders of the once majority opposition the Reformist PRSC are markedly divided as to its reunification process.
One group, which has left the PRSC to support the ruling PLD party and its leader Leonel Fernandez, considers that the only way to save the once powerful organization from oblivion is by reunifying all its rank-and-file under the figure of the Head of State, whom they define heir to the leadership of Joaquin Balaguer, their deceased founder.
But all ex members of the PRSC don’t agree with that position.
Although he favors a merger with the PLD, the ex PRSC leader Angel Lockward said it’s not a topic that can be discussed without the presence of the ruling party. “It’s not elegant for me to propose a fusion with those who don’t know it.”
Close supporters of the Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales, who heads the parallel the Reformist Presidential Council, say that while the government official agrees with the reunification, he’s not in favor of the fusion.
Meanwhile PLD general secretary Reinaldo said its Political Committee must be the first to deal with any topic on an alliance and clarified that the PRSC hasn’t channeled any request for a discussion in that regard.
Eyeing a reunification, an important group of PRSC leaders propose a modification of the party’s statutes to declare an amnesty paving the way for the expelled leaders’ return.

I am hoping for oblivion so this can be just a bad memory to most

I may be a minority in this opinion; but I think the PRSC should be left to wither and die. Unlike the PRD (in its earlier incarnation) and the PLD (today), the PRSC represents not just a reminder of one of the darkest era in our country; but the democratic system at its worse (corruption, nepotism, absence of the rule of law...).
It represents a throwback to the time of Caudillos; an echo of days long past. Like the image of its founder, the PRSC should be consigned first to memory; then to history...and finally to oblivion.

The PRSC is going to disappear because right-wing ideology is withering away all across the globe. People have realized that the only solution is the Third Way. That's why I support Leonel and Obama. They believe in ethical capitalism and moderate progressivism!!!

arkatype,
The PRD of the Jose Fransico Pena Gomez era personified the Social Democratic ideas that have become the way of the world today. Unfortunately, the PRD under Hipolito Mejia was nothing more than a Kleptocracy--however, they possess the capacity still to live up to the dreams of Dr. Pena Gomez.
Say what you will about the PLD; but the level of corruption know during the "12 years", the Guzman, Blanco and Mejia years have not been seen under President Fernandez.

Balaguer was a sadist,:a sexual perversion in which gratification is obtained by the infliction of physical or mental pain on others (as on a love object) — compare masochism
2 a: delight in cruelty b: excessive cruelty = specially an excessive cruel person.
Please see the documentaries done on this perversed and cruel man.
Anything that is associated with Balaguer should be destroyed, specially the pathetic handouts that he gave to people enslaving them to him and his administrations. He destroyed poor people's pride in honest work and created beggars...
In public killing anyone who opposed him and his crunnies, publicly honoring the military officers/thugs for the massacre of over 3,000 dominicans by up ranking them in the media and giving them property and money.
he loved to sneak up on sweaty maids working to have his way on them. In his own words please read his open parenthesis of what he thought of people...
These are the actions of a sadist...

NYCDR,
What does it all say about us. After the trauma of the "12 years", we elected him in 1996, 1990, 1994...
If he was a sadist; then we were all masochists
Shame on US...Shame on ALL OF US!!!!

Let's face the facts. If the rats leaving the sinking ship that is the PRSC thought for one minute that they could keep their party and continue to feed at the public trough, there is no way these "proud" public servants would switch allegiance. They have looked at what is on their table and compared it to the feast that is being enjoyed by the PLD and have made their decision based on that and nothing else. Please don't insult us by claiming that there is any moral reason for the switch. GREED and nothing else is the reason.

It's a bit insane to think right politics are in retreat across the world when the world's greatest power was until two years ago run exclusively by a right party. However perhaps it is more insane ascribing cogent ideology to any of these organizations. As juanb said greed seems to be the only motivator here...ideology, even bad ones, require a higher order of thought than 'me,me,me'.

Granted, the political landscape in the D.R is abysmal. That being said, us (The Dominicanos Ausentes) should get off our collective high horses when criticizing the political institutions back home. It's very easy to pontificate when we are sitting at our well-paying jobs, driving gas guzzling SUVs and taking for granted 24-hr Electricity and Hot Water.
We should not be so quick to judge ALL Dominican politicians as one. Some of them are honestly trying to provide the means by which the ones left behind back home can have a better future. I for my part, will give President Fernandez (him, as an individual) the benefit of the doubt, while holding the government as a whole to account. You should all do the same.

We, the Domincans still here, don't have the luxury of prejudging. We are pointing out the lack of honesty, results, and integrity demonstrated by the goverment here during the past TWELVE YEARS. This is not some snap decision made by us. This is the reality of government here.

I'm worried however that the PLD might become right-wing if the former PRSC members take over the party. If that happens I will switch to the PRD as long as they have good leadership unlike el burro de Hippo!
