SANTO DOMINGO.- The Executive Branch’s adviser on Drugs yesterday said the Government will apply the parts that affect former president Hipólito Mejía in the conviction to 10 years ni prison of Baninter president Ramon Báez Figueroa and several of his executives.

Marino Vinicio -Vincho- Castillo, when asked about a letter Mejía sent to President Leonel Fernandez, said "for me that letter is everything that (Andres) Dauhajre and (Jaime) Aristy Escuder have been saying, trying to justify him and he doesn’t have a firm idea in his head,” in reference to Mejia’s former economic adviser and his colleague, respectively.

The official said that instead of Mejia gaining politically, “we’re now going to publish all the parts of the sentence that condemns him, and the reason why his administration had to be prosecuted."

Whereas ruling PLD party general secretary Reinaldo Pared said neither Mejía nor the PRD is competent to speak about the economy and much less to prescribe how to manage it. He said in Mejía’s hands an ailing economy would die.

Hippo will not see a day in prison. If the current government puts Hippo in prison it would just open the gates up for current gov officials who can, as well, be charged on numerous counts of corruption and fraud. They would be stupid to put a PRD crook in prison without fear that once they get back in power they would start putting PLD crooks in prison too.

If Quirino wasn't extradited to the US he would have never seen a day in prison too, probably would have been Escobar type of a deal, build your own mansion in the hills, call it a prison and serve your time there.

Username, you hit the nail squarely on the head. there is an unwritten pact of brotherhood among politicians, whereby they receive immunity from opposing factions. " do not prosecute me or mine when it is my turn at the trough, and i will not molest you when it's yours.

Maybe he'll be extradited because of his ties with Quirino, or Baninter, or Plan Renove.

But the Americans won't do it, because they don't have jail space to fit all the crooks he'd take down with him!
