SANTO DOMINGO.- A dispute over 1,200 kilos of cocaine brought on a boat by three Colombians and a Nicaraguan unleashed Monday’s massacre near the quite town Paya -famous for its sweets- and part of the southern Domincian city Baní, is one of the scenarios offered by Police, which affirms the shipment was in the house of the Colombian “El Don,” one of the seven shot dead.

As of Wednesday morning the authorities had only identified the Colombian Jesus David del Rio Hans, 28, and the only survivor, the Nicaraguan Holi Gomez, 30, and who investigators interrogated in a hospital.  As to the fatal victims, Police said El Don’s maid Mercedes Carvajal knew them only by their nicknames Negro, Darío, Hierrito, Blanquito and El Don.

According to Police, a Colombian who came to the house and said he was a friend of El Don, which led the house’s watchman opened the door and when he was about to close it the visitor told him to leave it open because he was going to leave immediately. At once, Police said, other men wearing blue uniforms entered and allegedly took the “prisoners” and drugs that were in a vehicle, put them in a SUV, took them to a sugarcane field of the mill Caei, and shot them.

Only the Nicaraguan survived in the group that the killers believed they had also eliminated. It’s believed that a Dominican and a Venezuelan are among dead.

The Police said it found three 9 millimeter pistols, ammunition, five cell phones and two long-range radios in the house. It seized a Ford F-150 pickup truck, a Hyundai Veracruz SUV, and Toyota 4-Runner, all with exhibition tags.

Police chief Rafael Guzmán today widened the investigation by designating the three generals who head the entity’s Criminal Intelligence, Antinarcotics and Internal Affairs Departments.

The maid Carvajal said the group came to the house at about 10 a.m. Monday in two black and one white SUV and demanded the drugs, and those inside gave them the key to a blue Daihatsu truck parked at the house. She added that the group had been living in that place for around one month.

Legalize it. If the government charged a tariff on the drugs, the DR would be a very rich nation.

This is quite frightening in my opinion. I fear that the Dominican Republic (Haiti as well) will soon become the next cartel hotspot a la 1980s Colombia. This is a serious affront to the island's reputation (Haiti already has to deal with a bad image that its desperately trying to fight off) and if this gets worse than tourism in D.R might be dealt a very serious blow. Drug trafficking devastates societies when it thrives and so we have to deal with this before it boils over.

I agree with you HAYkickyouintheSHIN, this is really bad, everyone see's it, everyone know's it but it's just oblivious (kinda like (american physco)

Are you crazy if we legalize it, DR is really going in the sh**ter. Besides Dr would never see the money, remember, it's always missing.

Crazy would be trying to fight it in a country like the DR where everybody knows whats going on and they all look the other way. HAYkickyouintheSHIN I agree with you. But I do think we should legalize it because anything in moderation is OK. The government should allow pharmacies to sell the drugs it would eliminate the corner drug dealers. There would be no cartel, no US funded drug war, no 'masacres'.

Well both gov'ts have to address this matter as quickly as possible and try to deal with this as efficiently as they can because the last thing Haiti and D.R need is to become fully-fledged narco-states. Can you imagine PAP and SD turning into the Caribbean versions of 1980s Cali and Medellin? Convicted drug traffickers on both sides of the island should automatically receive life sentences. Both peoples need to put the bickering aside for one moment and put this on the top of their lists. This has got to end so that we can prevent a Haitian or Dominican Pablo Escobar from engulfing the island into a state of fear and violence.

GC, right out of my mouth. This drug dealing has been going on for years it is getting worse because the Colombian cartel has moved to the island of hispaniola. Hay, the haitian pablo escobar was already in the making but someone ratted him out. There was this colombian trafficker that promise to build Jacmel if he was given impunity to run his industry. Let me be quiet..if you think this wasn't known by the people that is suppose to fight this war on drugs. I say legalising it would be better off where government can tax its sale just like tobacco.

God Help Us ! After reading about the mass murder in Bani a few things pop in my head like...
Was this a planned hit by insiders with good reliable up to date information ? "The perfect set-up"..

With the total numbered murdered the first thing that pops in my mind is, is this a "Hit & Run" or can we say "Pay-back "? or even "Turf War" ?

Is this the future wave of things to come ? .....Lets face it, this is not first time an operation like this has been operating, Right? {1200 KILOS OF COCAINE] one has to be in with very good connections to handle this much volume, right !...

It is much easier to hit an all ready established organization, then be stuck with so much product with no means to profit from, right ?...

And judging by the items recovered at the Murder scene it looks like a no run of the mill drug dealers to me.
Agree not, but after reading the facts so far, this is the only conclusion I can reach at this point.

NOPE TO DOPE, UG TO DRUGS.

Ever since Bush took over and focused the U.S. resources toward the Middle East and so called "Terrorism," drug trafficking has increased exponentially in the Caribbean. The Americans has diverted resources away (such as patrolling the Caribbean and the Pacific for drugs to chasing terrorists has left the Caribbean vulnerables (since we don't have the military resources to withstand this invasion). Now Caribbean nations have to allocate social and humanitarian resources to put a dent to this flux. But we have failed, now we are becoming consumers and becoming more violent (since drugs and violence go together). I BLAME THE UNITED STATES FOR CONSUMING AND FOR IGNORING THE PROBLEM!

Time to get seriously tough. Also the media should be more responsible and not tell everyone there's a survivor, where he's hospitalized, and when the police will interview him. The media just told those responsible to kill the sole survivor before the police gets a chance to interview him by doing that.

In a way this is probably a good eye opener for everyone as many look at the drug news with one eye and the other eye on if Boston won the night before or if the vecina is "pegando cuerno".

The drug dropoffs in the south is legendary and not one major shipment has ever been seized. Sure in the airports or in the Romana area but never in the south. This should blow the lid off of the corruption and flow of drugs for alittle while anyway.

Is this Nicaraguan really a survivor?

How the hell, if the borders of the US are soooooo fortified, that tons of drugs are still getting through. The US has the highest inmate population in the world, but he drugs just keeps coming through. Where is the problem in the producer or consumer? I say in the consumer. Where you can have a pop artist or MTV video with people obviously smoking weed and puffing smoke right where all teenagers can glorify it.

If there is no demand, the cartels would have to take those plants and shove them up their @sses.

There is relatively little consumption of drugs in DR. Where most people find taking drugs offensive. DR is just a bus stop for the drugs into the US.

Is it the fault of the Dominican Government then? It seems that some of the visitors here on DT are living in an UPSIDE DOWN WORLD .. they are so screwed up with all the cocaine they are snorting .. that they are actually starting to believe this is all the fault of the Dominicans .. and all this time they wanted to have ME believe that I was crazy .. that they were "normal" .. these so called "experts" .. who spend their entire day posting on this blog .. were able to "diagnose" my "mental illness" from the comfort and safety of their living rooms .. that is what COCAINE does to people .. gives them ILLUSIONS OF GRANDEUR .. You will simply switch to CRACK COCAINE and other illicit drugs. You will increase the abuse of PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION. You will continue looking for more ways to GET HIGH. You just GOTTA GET HIGH each and every day. Each and every week. Each and every year. Why? What is it in your supposedly EFFLUENT country making you so MISERABLE. You have a lot of money. The two problems are related and cannot be solved separately .. there is not much in the way of a "Narcotics Market" in the DR to sustain the volume of trafficking we are seeing here in the DR .. the narcotics are headed for the US "Narcotics Market" .. therefore solving the problem in the DR is virtually impossible .. without first addressing the root cause of massive narcotics consumption in the US .. and it is not just illegal narcotics that is plaguing Americans .. they are also addicted to the massive consumption of PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. America is the epitome of a DRUG ADDICTED SOCIETY. The problem is so huge that they have virtually given up dealing with it. So how do you expect a poor country like the DR to handle a problem that is STUMPING the RICHEST NATION ON EARTH?

The DR has definitely become a major cocaine transhipment point .. we should therefore be prepared to see more of the kind of carnage witnessed in Bani .. Mexico is dealing with a more highly evolved symptom of the same disease .. after the Arellano-Felix drug cartel lost it's grip on shunting cocaine through Mexico .. they were quickly replaced by a less "professional" and more deadly variant of the same disease .. their fingerprints are all over Tijuana .. which has turned into a war zone of rival drug factions involved in murder and kidnapping .. who do not hesitate wiping out entire families in retaliation for "deals gone bad". Is this what is in store for us in the DR? Well thanks a lot America.

NO .. the Mexicans are NOT TO BLAME .. they are VICTIMS .. let's say somebody and their family is inside their home .. minding their own business.. they then get hit by bullets being fired by rival gangs .. Should we blame the VICTIMS? blame the POLICE? These drug traffickers were never "invited" into Dominican or Mexican territory. The scale of the problem is so large that neither the Dominican nor the Mexican governments can handle it. In fact the problem is so large that even the US DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY is STUMPED. They are sitting around and scratching their heads while thousands of young Americans die from COCAINE .. HEROIN .. METH. However it is DEFINITELY the RESPONSIBILITY of the US GOVERNMENT to HALT THIS SCOURGE .. because AMERICANS are the PRINCIPAL CONSUMERS and VICTIMS of the NARCOTICS TRAFFICKING through Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
