SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Air Force (FAD) Chief of Staff yesterday admitted that the lack of airplanes prevents an effective patrol of Dominican airspace, and revealed that the flights which violate the airspace to drop drugs, guns and cash have jumped 38 percent.
Pedro Rafael Antonio said he presented the data to the Miami-based Joint Interagency Task Force, the antinarcotics entity that groups similar Latin American agencies.
"What’s happening is that our country’s current airspace weakness is being freely taken advantage of and the Air Force’s mission demands a response in that regard, for that reason we’re going before the Senate so it approves the purchase of the Super Tucano airplanes," Antonio said.
The official said although patrols are conducted with the Chilean-manufacture Pillan airplanes, in coordination with the Drugs Control Agency, new aircraft are needed because drug traffickers have unlimited resources.

When the congress buy the airplanes the problem will be fuel and the lack of maintenance.

not to mention the fact that they will be immediately dismantled for parts to be sold on the international black market, maybe even to the very drug dealers they are purportedly intended to dissuade.

But this will be after thy they fly the hell out of them. Then unable to pay for maintenance and parts then they'll resort to cannibalization.
Really frustrates me that we have countless Dominican Professional Athletes, Celebrities Business moguls and we cannot mobilize to change the state of our national affairs. Gives proof we are a nation of idiots.

ladronaso, i have encountered countless dominicans who are moral, intelligent, caring people, who desperately want to see the country move forward. sadly, they eschew politics, leaving it to the criminal element.

I agree the DR needs some state of the art Radar but that doesn't look good at the Military parade on 27 de Febrero.
From: United States
you see. anthonyc, that was insightful. why can't you make comments like that all the time? yes folks, you cannot walk down the street with the radar strapped to the back of some Generalissimo, counterbalancing the weight of the medals on his chest. you know how we love a good show, so all equipment has to be portable. it is kinda like the guys who have the biggest jeepetas, but sleep on the floor, because nobody is looking inside the bedroom.

The other issue is that the DR cannot buy a true state of the art Radar Tracking system, The US won't sell it to them.
The Real Solultion is the let the US set up a radar tracking abse in the DR. That way the airways are monitored. It won't cost the DR $$$$ and it will actually pump money into the local economy wherever they set up the base.
Of course than the Psuedo Nationalist will then be all up in arms screaming and burning tires.

I can guarantee you that with the eight airplanes, drug trafficking will exponentially increase via Haiti/border and then the responsibility will fall on the National Army to curb drugs, contraband, human trafficking, and weapons across the border!

Funny that you mention that, yesterday there was a protest in front of the Domiinican Consulate, @ 30 people, about a dozen Haitains, a few Latino, but more than half were White American Communist (when was the last time you heard a person call another "commrade"?) , one of the people had a sign that read "U.S. Army out of Dominican Republic!" I didn't know we were still occupying the country.

I want you Dominicans to make that mistake some day. and Believe me that day oh...... that very day.......Its only natural that we Haitians venture out to the other side of the island because legally the whole Island belong to US.

Congress have not approved the purchase of those 8 plains yet, that's what happened. Anyway, the DR needs those radars, fighter planes and other weapons. If any organization or nation "won't let us" buy them, then we should start making our own. No-one can prevent us from doing that, well, except for our politicians that prohibited us from making our own weapons and condemned us to buy our defense from elsewhere....if they let us.

Brazil which is a major player in the aviation Biz cannot make Fighter Planes. The Tucano is basically a Turbo-Prop trainer converted to Coin and FAC versions. The Tucano took years of designing, study and development before it ever took off for the first time. They also had major assitance from the US and EU aerospace companies.
The Tucano was also developed to be marketed and sold to other countries as a primary trainer and COIN/FAC attack plane. Brazil never would have gone to such lenghts and spent so much money if the plane was just for the Brazilian Military.

Actually bang for your buck wise they are excellent aircraft for what they are designed for. COIN and FAC for small countries with limited budgets.

It is true, that te planes would serve their purpose. To use in inderdiction services and the required flight training hours to maintain the pilots current. You also must take into account that the expenses for interdiction get partially re-imbursed from US funds for narcotics offensive.
They were just given 4 planes of which maybe the Seneca II and Navajo (Twin Engine) are the only ones capable of serving in an interdiction role. Regardless what happens, the life span of the aircraft will be 4 years. We should have got them as soon as Leonel won.
What would be happening right now had their been a change in party/president due in 5 days. everyone in government would be stealing as much as possible.
We can not, not do something because of corruption excuse. The PLD has shown us that it (corruption) is not a party problem (PRD-PRSC) it is a way of life, a custom. A Dominican tradition. Brazil beats DR in corruption, yet it is an emerging nation, you have to deal with it.
