So, Mr. D.R. can affort to extend aids to another country while its owned people are claiming a high costs of living. These food items can be placed in the market and force the price to come down, even though the amount is not so significant its a sign that D.R. government can work to stabilized the price of basic food items produced in D.R. But, of course, D.R. is a super rich country and Cuda is a poor nation under so called communits rule and domination. D.R. needs to care of its owned before taking other nations problems, I asured you that Cuba does not need such aids but it will used it to showed the rest of the world that there are countries in solidarity with them and a minus to the U.S................................

When it is DR's turn and the Cubans extend a hand this will have made sense. NO POINT WHATSOEVER in bringing politics into it, or pretending that keeping the food in DR would change much for long. This small bit of food will do more for real people in Cuba today at this moment , and at a bearable price to the people in DR. Be sure that one day the tables will be turned because no one escapes mother nature.

you have rationale for your position Manny ...what you say is true ...I just hope this maybe the straw that will really change things in that country that I so want to be free...I do not want a chaotic or violent change ...but an end to this totalitarian nightmare that will allow the people of Cuba the freedom to decide their own future...I can only hope some good will come from this suffering in the long term

I don't agree with communism, but I think that it's good that the DR is helping Haiti and Cuba. As long as that help goes to those that really need it and not some politicians it's all good.

Cuba Monday turned down 5 million dollars US aid...On Monday, the US government said it had raised its initial offer of $100,000 aid for Cuban hurricane victims to up to $5m, but Cuba had rejected it.
Cuban state television, quoting a diplomatic cable, said that the government had responded that Cuba "could not accept a gift" while under a US embargo. ......................This sounds like cutting off your nose to spite your face.....let us hope this will be the end of the Castro Bros.....this is the worst storm in recorded history for Cuba..

"During the natural disasters occcuring since 1959, all aid sent to the Cuban people has been intercepted by the Communist tyranny, placed in control of the those who exploit the country, directed to supply the requirements of the tourist industry, or sold at high prices at the so-called 'diplotiendas' [luxury stores in Cuba that use US dollars], which the Cuban worker has no access to.

It is true that the RD Gov needs to do more at home. As an American I was shocked at how high prices were in August '08 so, I know poor Dominicans have a tougher time now than every. I think it is politically correct to help your neighbor (Cuba)...BUT, charity starts where? AT HOME!
I am a true-blue Americano thus anti communist, but honest see some small changes with Raul. However, it was stupid to reject $5M in US Aid. It was a 1st step by the US and should have been accepted by Cuba.
Our US policy is to economically embargo because they are communists (which is understandable except) we labor to do all the business we can with China (communist). There is inconsitency here due to catering to "special interests" such as corporate lobbyist at GE who want to engage China and Cubans in Miami who vote and do not want anything with Cuba. Thus, we are inconsistent because we cater to conflicting special interests on two communist countries.

So what if the government helps Cuba how is a little bit of food going to hurt the country that bad? It is not. Plus they are just as human as you are have we forgotten compassion and love in exchange for ignorance and chuck change. Stop being ridiculous. Changes begin with YOU. You need to change and be a responsible individual and a responsible citizen.
US don't care if you communist as long as you producing that money and that power for them. And does anybody here know the meaning of communism or it's history? Plus there has never been true communism or true capitalism i.e. market economy . Going against "communism" governments is a front by governments. And governmenst that become dictators in the name of communism are also a front.

But not even hurricanes of this ferocity could break down the lack of trust between Cuba and its old foe, the United States. Instead, the two have plunged into yet another round of political argy-bargy. The Bush administration offered Cuba $100,000 in immediate relief aid, later raised to $5m, but Mr Castro turned it down, demanding instead that America lift its trade embargo to enable it to buy urgently needed reconstruction materials. (In neighbouring Haiti by contrast, where the storm damage was worse, the United States promptly dispatched a helicopter-laden warship to help relief efforts, as well as pledging $19.5m in aid.)
