President Fernandez wants the olanes.
SANTO DOMINGO.- While the Dominican Republic Senate yesterday aproved a US$93.7 million loan to buy 8 Brazilian-made Super Túcano intercept aircraft, the country once again figures among drug trafficking’s main world transit routes, in the annual report issued by the President of the United States.
The senators approved the loan negotiated with Brazil’s National Economic Development Bank and the company Embraer Aeronautics, and will now go to the Chamber of Deputies where approval is expected.
Meanwhile a memo sent by president George Bush to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice contains a list of the “main countries for Drug Transit and Illicit Drug Production for fiscal year 2009."
"I hereby identify the following countries among the main traffic routes and centers of illicit drug production: Afghanistan, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela," Bush said, though he specified that to appear in the list " isn’t necessarily a negative evaluation of the antidrug efforts of the governments or on the levels of cooperation.”

I can just see it.
Private aircraft with 2 children on board shot down over Dominican Republic.
AP news reports that the pilot of DR aircraft used wrong frequency to contact civilian aircraft when, no response was given by the private aircraft the civilian aircraft was shot down.
Pilot was suspended from duty while the Leonel government investigates the fatality.

Look to the bright side: the stuff will come in much quicker and to lesser risk on board those super Tucainos.

Prez LF does not care about the drug war...this is just "window dressing" and it is very expensive grand standing. Trust me, I have emailed these guys directly about the micro-trafficking from Haiti to my barrio of Ensanche Caonabo (Los Platanitos) in Santiago where drugs are held for a cooling off before being broken-down to be redistributed. Do you think the the Prez LF or the DNCD Jefe or Police Chief ordered to have this drug distribution center closed down and destroyed? I even sent fotos of one of the main criminals from the Pichardo drug family so there could be no mistake. As of today, the Pichardos and the operation are still at full capacity.
So, reader beware...don't fall for these orchestrated press releases... because it is more form (grandstanding) than substance! The real question is: how much of a kick-back will Prez LF get for buying 3rd rate planes from Brazil vs state of the art US or EU airplane manufacturer?

What a spectacle. I really do not know the answer to the drug problem but this is not one. This is a recipe for disaster.

I personally know 4 guys that are in the FAD (Fuerza Aerea Dominicana) and one is a childhood friend. These guys are very professional. You guys have this mentality that if its Dominican its bad. These guys train at home and get polished overseas (U.S. and Europe), if it makes u feel better. You guys have lost your sense of creativity and need to let loose a little. The FAD isn't really going to shoot down anyone. The planes will be used as a deterrent and border patrol. And its obvious that it irks everyone to see the D.R. guard its airspace and border. Reminds me of those that only think about the problem and never of a solution. How about this, list 3 things the gov't can do to safeguard its border and airspace?

3. Disolve the PLD!

And thats the solution to solving human and drug trafficking in Dominican territory??? If these problems have persisted up to now then that means that no other measure from previous administration has worked so dont hold it on Leonel. The country is 164 years old and some of the national problems have been present since day one, but it doesnt matter, Leonel is to blame.
Is this how you think? Wow... I really do hope you are one in a million.

TO JD_DOMINGUEZ...the word kick-back is a fancy word used by corrupt U.S. gov't politicians, (e.i. Pedro: Oye, yo necesito una vainita de esa. Policia: da'te algo ahy pa'la cena ave' que se puede ase por ti. Pedro: Mire comando $100 pesito, u'te sabe que la cosa 'ta mala. Policia: No,'ta bien, depreocupece.
Adquirering the Super Tucanos as opposed to F16 is a smart move. Why? b/c is not about the cost of the plain, but the overall cost of the maintenance. It costs a lot less to replace a propeller than a jet engine fan, add to that the cost of training the maintenance personnel, jet fuel consumption, the cost of flight hours, flying time before refuling, etc..
The U.S. does not agree w/ D.R. purchasing these machines b/c they are not getting part of the deal yet they are happy to sell them radars.
JD. I do believe you about the Pichardo family, but LF is part of the Gov't not of your local precinct and thats why he's trying to diminish the trafficking of drugs on a higher lev

Eventhough I dislike Leonelcito a lot, regarding super tucanos (Embraer) I don't belive they are 3rd class airplanes, Embraer are tough made and low cost maintenance airplanes; I do fly commercial airplanes and they are built to last too.
For example if You compare an F-16 (around US$100 millions) to a Super tucano (around US$9 Millions) it's a big difference, also take in consideration the maintenance for these jets will be astronomic (F-16) or any other european airplanes.
Bottom line Embraer company eventhough made in Brasil (south america) are a good , affordable and long lasting choice airplane compare to other american or european airplanes, also I'm not debating the terms that they were purchased just the airplanes quality.

JRRubirosa..... If im not mistaken, an F16 costs about 18 to 20 million, but given the cost of maintenance and the number of plains this number jumps to about 20 million extra per plain within a few years.

Sorry for the miscomunication, meant to post between US$(15) millions and US$(19) millions for the F-16 airplane and also would like to correct that eventhough difference between both airplanes in price is few millions I changed my mind and I think that Dominican goverment should ask for some help from the US and maybe wouid be a better deal buying half of airplanes let's say 4 or 6 F-16 instead of 8 super tucanos, deeply apologize and I'm correcting my own post

Shoot them down just like any real country would. Just because you could shoot down a civilian plane by accident is no justification to let the drug bombardment of our nation to continue. Plus they won't just start shooting, they will first try to contact the aircraft that enters our territory illegally and ask them to land. If they refuse and continue to defy the authorities, then they will be shot down. These planes are not enough, we still need radars and tougher punishment for drug traffickers and other criminals. Bring back the death penalty! Life in prison should be the softest punishment. Also, do what has to be done with these criminals' friends (Admesty International and other "human rights" organizations).

JRRubirosa..... according to my math, 8 is greater then 4. F-16s are an offensive aircraft so you cant have 4 F-16s alone. These planes are nothing on their own. They need to be complimented with ground radar, logistics, intelligence. Only countries with plenty of cash can adquire these beauties. Super Tucanos have a greater range and thus consumes less fuel per same distance. Any way you look at it, the purchase of the Tucanos is a better investment than the F-16s. Just admit it. And like I said... it cost a lot less to keep the Tucanos on the air.

I think I posted before: I like the Malaysian model. Death for traffickers, jail for users. Now, they don't care if something transits and is shipped to another country. This is the latter's problem. The point is, they got no street drug problem.
Used to be like this down here before, but population increased, repression faded out and everybody got greedy.
Know about any cheap flights to Djakarta?
From: Dominican Republic
Even the Tuscanos will be ineffective at night, when 99% of the inbound flights take place, against inbound illegal aircraft without radar on both the ground and on the aircraft in an intercept and fire control mode.
Any of you ever try to join up at night with another aircraft (required for a visual intercept) where the exhaust has been masked? Even radar won't help much unless it's a moonlight night and you're below the target, then it's a 30-70% chance you'll still not see him. And these guys will be coming in at wave top levels.
If you aren't a pilot, and haven't ever tried that maneuver, keep your stupid mouths shut because you only make fools of yourselves with your comments.

My conrention is if they don't know anything about the subject, they should form questions instead of making assinie statements in order to educate themselves about the subject.
