SANTO DOMINGO. - The bill to reform the Constitution, which president Leonel Fernandez is expected to send to Congress this week, eliminates the paragraph that prevents the president from opting for a third term after being reelected.
The Reform bill, which extends the Dominican Constitution from the current 122 pages to 289, also eliminates the right of foreigners born in the national territory of being Dominican, and instead will only be able to apply for it after reaching 18 years of age.
As far as the president of the Republic, it woul read: “The president will be chosen every four years and can opt for a second consecutive period,” eliminating the current “they’ll not be able to again run for this post.”
The journalist Euri Cabral provided the information Tuesday on the new Constitution’s bill in the Z-101 morning radio program.

'Eh pa tra que van, if congress allows this change in the constitution. 4th term.
This reminds me of Balaguer when he mentioned that he will not seek reelection, yet when time came he stated that he had no choice but to be reelected. Hey, he even pretended to be in a helicopter crashed and survived while in his 60's??? and gave a long speech stating that God speared his life to show his true purpose that he should go for reelection!
I doubt that Leonel would go this low but hey you never know. He is following the same steps as his predecessors.

Juan Bosch often spoke of a "Popular Dictatorship" This concept was a major cause of his rift with the PRD. With the extraordinary powers a Domincan President has all of them are dictatators anyway

Hey if a guy is doing a good job why not leave him in power? Eventually if he starts messing up the people will vote him out and choose another President. Unlimited re-election is not synonymous with President for life or dictatorship!

I will give Dr. Fernandez the benefit of the doubt...
That said, unless this--and any other initiatives--has a tangible (and positive) impact on the lives of the Dominican Public, this is all: MUCHA ESPUMA Y POCO CHOCOLATE.
I would "bet even money" that most Dominicans couldn't care less if LF stayed in power 100 years, provided that the underlying standard of living improved (i.e no more APAGONES, price controls for essential goods & Services, the prospect of a job and decent wages, ACTUAL health care, etc.). If he wants to be the new Caudillo, all the power to him. As long as he delivers.

Don't get me wrong, I love democracy (and the inherent ability to tell my government to f*#k off); but I do think that Democracy, to expense of economic gains, is simple empty rhetoric. Job one must be the ability to put food on the table and a roof over one's head.
We (in the West) may not like Vladimir Putin; but you cannot argue he delivered (and continues to deliver) for the Russian People. Proof positive that given the choice between "Democracy" and a full belly, people will choose to get their fill.

"Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". Someone insightfully said.
Fernandez Reyna has had too much of a good thing. He's suffering form the 'campesino embullao' complex. Tu vi'te como me hicieron caso, mami? It's like what happened with the Hillary and Bill duo, a couple of simpletons who discover the halls of power are addictive, and can't get enough. They need another fix....uno mas, por favor. Pues, yo digo que "last call". Se acabo lo que daba.....Tell him to get out his American passport and go back to NYC, perhaps Bill can get him a suite on the highrise where he hangs out on 125 st. Leonel next stop 125 Street-Harlem.

Leonel is the best President the Dominican Republic has ever had. He's not perfect and has made mistakes, but he's done a lot more than anyone else. The only thing I'm mad about is the unequal share of wealth, but I believe that this will begin to change soon as the middle class grows and starts to pay more taxes...as long as that money is not stolen by crooks in the government the DR will be developed by 2030. The Dominican Republic became a democracy in 1996 not in the 60s like many believe. So for a country that's still a young democracy of 12 years I think it's done a terrific job!
