Santo Domingo.– Dominican police are investigating the murder of an Icelandic woman who was the managing director of Hotel Extreme in Cabarete. Three hotel employees have been arrested.

The woman’s associate found her body in the bathroom of her hotel room on Monday. She had been stabbed in her shoulder, hand, chest and head. Police believe the murder was committed on Sunday.

According to El Nacional, this is the second serious crime committed within a week in the region. Last week a hotel manager was kidnapped.

The Icelandic woman, Lilja Geolgsdottw, 29, was unmarried and had no children. She had been traveling the world since April this year, to Australia, Dubai and finally to the Dominican Republic.

Things are ugly for foreigners on the North Coast. Last week, it was the assistant manager of a large hotel from POP, beaten silly and left for dead with 4 bullets in him.

Now this!!

I guess if that were to be published in the tourist-source countries, there'd be a serious lull in next season arrivals.

Bernies this is not the first time some foreigner gets kill in D.R or in any country in the world for that matter. It funny to me because of this headline article, nobody knows the real details of this murder or the circumstances. Was it a robbery or payback, was the killer somebody she knew or a complete estranger. Nevertheless everybody here paying their condolences.
Maybe she was doing dope in the bathroom and didn’t wanna pay afterwards.
This ain’t going to kill the industry as some of you doomsayers predict. It is sad, but hey s*it happens!!! Just look at the # of tourist that gets zapp everyday all around the world.

bernies be glad it wasn’t your punk azz on that pic.

despite the several incidents that happen here every year the DR is one of the most safe destinations in Central, Latin America and the caribbean.

Too bad she didn't live a fuller life but there are USUALLY explanations to these types of things which come out later.

Barbaric and brutal in any society.

jander, nobody is trying to justify the incident. we are just wondering about the motivations for such an act. dropping bombs on civilians from 30,000 feet high is also brutal and barbaric, in any society.

There is a psychopathic killer on the loose . With a touch of Norman Bates thickening the plot

And I have already told some frineds who emailed today to hold off going to that part of the island.

So instead they will go to Negril.

The police have to do there job and if they catch the ones reponsible then I am sure people will feel safer.

I'm no cop, but that many stab wounds make it sounds like the killer(s) has anger issues (not a robbery) with the victim.

a very astute observation, Zak325. that is why poster Escott"s post makes great sense. robbers are known to kill victims on many occasions, but the degree of violence depicted here speaks to a larger issue.

And I have already told some frineds who emailed today to hold off going to that part of the island.

So instead they will go to Negril. (poster)

And they will get robbed there? or in Toronto or Montreal or Kansas City. So what? I live here and work here and have never felt threatened...

(except by a drunk gringo, the drunken father of the Casanova Resturant manager, I complained about the pizza being smaller but the same price, and was kicked out (after paying) and assulted from behind by the father. Place should be closed down - or send drunken daddy back to England and start looking after your guests)

Robbers here use guns - not knives. If it was staff - there is the problem. Maybe she rejected some guys advances. It happens.

Solution: pay the localpolice totake the guilty up to the mountains and shoot them. All robbers who use guns. Finish a few of them off and the message gets out. Problem in Cabarete is many are related to the cops.

OMG!!! How atrocious. This kind of situation is what gives the Dominican Rep. and all of it's citizens a bad name anywhere and everywhere we go. It is sad and unfortunate that someone in the spring of her life is killed for no reason. The local authorities must do something about this and the crime should not go unpunished. RIP Lilja Geolgsdottw, and know that these criminals will not go unpunished for KARMA will hunt them down and do you justice.

I have been to Cabarete. It is one of my top 3 places in DR. Cabarete has quite a few foreigners living and working there. The foreigners I have spoken to all had one thing in common. They were all adventurous. They were looking for something different and a level of freedom that their country did not provide. These people enjoy living. Many times I thought about starting a business in Cabarete because it is a beautiful place and layed back. It is too bad that evil hearted people exist. God will judje the person or people who killed Lilja. My prayers go out to her family.

I like what the god guy said in the movie. The bad guy says "You are not the judge". The good guy says "No, I am just arranging the meeting". Take these people out and shoot them! 1. they cannot kill again. 2. Others will think twice.

One DR guy killed a respected local DR Schoolteacher, in the papers this week, They got him and a judge gave him one year in jail.

I've seen the pictures of that woman in Cabarete PD, and those 3 suspect guys, all Americans. One, the bartender was sitting behind the bars, as I spoke to him, and another 2 were talking to the police. The police were looking at the pictures on a laptop, of that woman laying in bathroom, stabbed, a lot of blood. I don't know what's end of the story though.
I came to the police becuase my camera was stolen from the room in the Sans Souci beach hotel in Cabarete. The hotel was empty, and I think it's somebody from the personnel. I figured out that it was possible to open the door from outside, through the window, while the blinds were open. Next day my friend's shoes were stolen from a balcony of the same hotel.
Cabarete is a nice place, but after all those things happened there, I don't think they will get good flow of tourists. Me at least won't come to Cabarete again, and I will not recommend it to anybody else.

Tourists who go to any third world country where there is serious poverty will have to take precautions - and even then may get robbed. It is what goes along with traveleing out there on the edge. I recommend you go to some small mid west USA town and stay safe (avoid all big USA cities)

I own and run a small hotel in Cabarete- they only time we have ever had problems is when guest ignore our precautions (do not bring girls home, do not leave stuff outside - like your friends shoes - hide cameras or put them in thesafe - and lock doors and windows) Only when guests ignore this common sense do we have trouble - and then they go and blame CAbarete or the hotel...stay safe - stay in the USA or where ever!

Though it was my second time in DR and in Cabarete, and I travel extensively in third world countries, I had no problems before, except once in Montreal, when my car was broken in. My stuff was never stolen from inside the hotel room in any country, and I traveled more than 50.
I think that Cabarete is the best place in DR, but I will never visit it again anymore after that. Thanks to Sans Souci hotel staff.

Cabarete is the best, you say, but you are never coming back because of staff at one of 37 hotels? Next time stay at the owner occupied and run Casa Blanca! Darn, there will be no next time...rated number one on Trip Advisor!

I understand how you feel, but when I find a "best place" I would never let the staff of one hotel chase or keep me away! Regards! Stay safe.
