Santo Domingo.- More than 500 members of Fordham University's community—many of them students of Dominican ancestry—greeted Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernández with wild applause at the Rose Hill campus and welcomed him back to his old New York city turf.
Fernández, who spent 14 of his formative years in New York City’s Dominican enclave of Washington Heights, reciprocated by inviting Fordham’s students to join him on his mission to make his small nation a model of democracy in the Latin American world.
“We don’t look at you as Dominicans living abroad,” he told the standing-room-only crowd assembled in Keating Hall. “This is a fence of transnationalism, geography doesn’t play the same role as before. If you happen to live in a barrio in New York called Washington Heights, it’s still Dominica. You [still] play an important role in the future of the Dominican Republic,” he said.
Fernández enjoys a reputation as a reformer and was elected to his 3rd presidential term in May, having shored up the economy and inspired double-digit economic growth in the Caribbean island nation during his last term. The president’s visit to Fordham coincided with his appearance Wednesday, Sept. 24, before the United Nations’ General Assembly to speak on social and economic strategies, and energy issues in oil-poor nations, noted the Fordham University.
On its Web site the University said the visit also coincides with the release of Caribbean Crusader: Leonel Fernandez and the Transformation of the Dominican Republic (Dorrance, 2008), an authorized biography by Ronald Schneider, Ph.D., professor emeritus of political science at Queens College.
Students from Fordham’s graduate program in International Political Economy and Development (IPED) program questioned Fernández on his plans to improve social programs now that the nation has become the largest economy in the Central American and Caribbean region. Fernández’ government recently completed construction of the first subway line in the capitol of Santo Domingo, a $700 million project that drew some criticism from advocates for health and education programs.
“Why did we focus on building a subway? I think we must become more independent from fossil fuels,” said Fernández. “Oil will peak in terms of its production, and the price will only increase. We need a system that is less dependent on the family vehicle.”

So the future lies in congested urban centers when the rural areas are healthier to live in, and raise a family? The future isn't gentrification, bud. Subways were a means of getting a populace from their (tenements) neighborhood to their work sites, way back when there was an industrial revolution. It's so 19 & 20 Century.... Now, everything is manufactured in Asia. Anyway, the future is Tourism, and Service, no? So, what's the subway for? To brag that there's a Subway in an Earthquake prone are? Happy digging!
Another point. Did he see the Jesuit Avery Dulles? Is that the reason for the Dominican visiting the Jesuits? Or, is that just his "Alma Mater". Get your ears full there Leonel, Good job at "Rose" Hill!

Visited the U.N. and became Citizen Kane for the poor and huddled Massess (Sara Lazarus), A Biography to boot, and now an audience with his wholly-ness the reclusive intellectual genius the geriatric King of New York - Cardinal Avery Dulles SJ. What an honor. Now I see where Leonel gets his stylo, "los powers". I truly expect him to come back to his other turf (not the Bronx) Gazcue with pilas nuevas like the ever ready rabbitt (Ray-o-Bac). It will be time for the "new" constitution, with plenty of advice from the Jesuit Priest who are so knowledgeable about governing countries. Preparense, que ahora si viene sabroso!

as a student from fordham university, i was at this event and was dissapointed at what President Leonel had to say. If you follow or have an idea of dominican politics, you could clearly smell the BS( he just wouldnt answer the questions, i mean fuels? cmon), but if you were there just because you were dominican and he was dominican you were impressed. I did however like his message at the end, where he advised the students in spanish to not only work hard but to make yourself known.

jyfELIZ,
I can imagine that he was evasive, I've never met the gent, but, I can tell that he's not keeping it real. Unlike you I lived in the city when Herman Badillo was the biggest, and closest thing we had to us Dominicanos. When I met Badillo, I was impressed, but, a true politician, he immediately started talking about stuff that he thought that the audience wanted hear.
So with Leonel, it's no surprise that he is similar, same animal different stripes, that's all.
But, my qualm with Fernandez visiting Fordham is why there? Why not Columbia? or NYU? Or, City Colle, Lehman College, John Jay, etc. He's getiing his orders from the Jesuit hierarchy vis a vis Cardinal Avery Dulles SJ, the convert. That's what I'm talking about. No, underestimating the school; Great school for all intents and purposes; it's just this funny visit, you now?

my friends and I were trying to figure out the same thing. Actually he was going to Columbia University today I believe at around this time. The same professor, Schneider, will also be there, so my opinion is that it is to promote that book.... I also wondered why not NYU, among others. It was most definitely a time consuming unnecessary and to quote you 'funny' visit. Do Leonel and the Jesuits have history?

No se si Leonel es un Jesuita?.
But, here's my dilemma; Why would he go to Fordham University? Not to take anything from the student body, the borough, or anything else concerning the long held tradition of unparalelled higher education. But it's those Jesuits that worry me. They run their (the US is divided into 10 tongues or parishes) whole presence in the country out of Fordham, from what I've heard. And Cardinal Avery Dulles SJ is the highest ranking Jesuit in America, he reports directly to the Black Pope, Alfonso Nicolas. These guys are the Pope's secret army. They run the whole shabang!

He asked for plenty of help for Haiti and cuba, this is a good gesture but I ask myself something
when Mr. Leonel F will be man enough and face Dominicans telling us that he gives a C..p about Dominican Rep and he is just using his power to get the United nations command post, nobel prize award and everything else to downgrade Dominican constitution ???

While checking around the WEB; I found the Fordham Univ. site, and noticed that the article above for Leonel's visit was identical except for 4 paragraphs; Like this one omitted here:
Founded in 1841, Fordham is the Jesuit University of New York, offering exceptional education distinguished by the Jesuit tradition to approximately 14,700 students in its four undergraduate colleges and its six graduate and professional schools. It has residential campuses in the Bronx and Manhattan, a campus in Westchester, and the Louis Calder Center Biological Field Station in Armonk, N.Y.
Also, there's another picture of Leonel with a "red" cap----Fernández dons a baseball cap presented by Father McShane.
