SANTO DOMINGO.- Police chief Rafael Guzmán Fermín said Friday that the authorities are meeting with owners of clubs and bars to evalue the control measures on the sale of alcohol.

He said although the measures were eased because of the past elections, they’ll be strictly enforced in the future, to continue to lower the crime rates.

Guzmán, interviewed by the Corripio media group, said crime has fallen considerably this year.

He said patrols on foot, motorcycles and in vehicles have increased in the hours and places where they’re most needed and said for the first time the Police can handle all crimes committed in the country. “The National Police has the capacity to respond to all crimes committed in Dominican society.”

Crime increases : Between January and July 2008 34.51% of the DR's 1,440 registered deaths were the result of violent incidents. According to statistics released by Interior and Police Minister Franklin Almeyda, of all violent deaths 66% were victims of gun wounds. Last year 38% of deaths were attributed to criminal activity, compared to 65.5% this year. According to the statistics, 58.4% of all victims were between the ages of 18 and 34, while 62.5% of all crimes happened between 6pm and 6am. Moreover, 55.2% of crimes happened between Monday and Thursday while 92.6% of victims were men.
Almeyda is quoted as saying, "our young men are being affected by this violence and we must find a solution to that." Almeyda says that despite the fact that the crime rate was pegged at 18% at the beginning of the year and there was a 20% increase in crime after the May 16 presidential elections, the DR continues to be a safe place to live.

this stupid decree TO REGULATE THE HOURS THAT PERSONS CAN DRINK does not deter anything except providing more handouts and stipens to the officials that enforce it.
in a tropical paradise country tourists visit to have fun, gamble, party and this stupid law only hurts the colmado owners that don't have the power
to change their imposed moronic schedule, cause the big hotels are exempted. it's like prohibition revisited in the 21 st century.
if it was for the priests and the puritan officials behind this dumb decree the women would now wear burkas and the schools would be segregated into boys and girls.

Well guys, with all the respect that you guys deserve. I think that we must do whatever it takes to reduce crime in our country. Is not really nice to walk around the street feeling unsafe. In canda the government controls everything that has to do with alcohol, and it might look socialist in some aspects, but after all is the safety of the citizens what matters. Canada is one of the safest countries in the world and is due to its alcohol and guns policy. We need to get serious and beging to realize that booze and guns leads no where. In fact, all it leaves is death and destruction. Why not instead concentrate our efforts in forming part of the community, implementing programs to invest time with our childre and friends in a sane way? is time for the Dominican population to grow, not only in size but also in character as we move forward in the 21 century. http://nicolasdelvalle.wordpress.com
