New York.– Dominican President Fernandez called education “the only way to speed up economic and social progress” and agreed that his government must concern itself with improving the public school system.
During his visit to Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science and Engineering, he cited increases in enrollment, the development of more effective teaching methods, and the integration of new technology as primary goals.
President Fernández referenced a joint education reform program between the Dominican government and the University. The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring Project a –Columbia afíliate– builds classrooms, trains teachers, and provides essential materials in an attempt to bring education to rural areas of the Dominican Republic.
Most students in attendance expressed interest in Latin American affairs and a desire to learn more about the Dominican Republic and President Fernández.
Accompanied by he First Lady of the Dominican Republic, Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, President Fernandez responded to questions from the audience and comments by Professor Emeritus Ronald Schneider and SIPA Dean John Coatsworth regarding Schneider’s recently published book, Caribbean Crusader: Leonel Fernández and the Transformation of the Dominican Republic.

Is really sad. No matter how hard one work, no matter the effort and no matter the advances that the country has experienced in the last few years all we worry about is talking nonsense. While living in the United States, I found that people talk really bad about the Dominican people and I think is because of the fact that we do not appreciate what is done for us. For example, instead of using this blog to post whatever come to our minds, why not take a minute and write something constructive and well organized. Instead of bashing everyone, why not take a minute and do a little investigation of the why the situation is how it is. As our country grows and walks towards a more modern state, is time for us to do our part representing it.

I have said since my early months here, the only way forward is through education. I really hope he is serious about what he said, because I for one will remember this day and expect to see an emphasis on education.
This country has to educate beyond the "three r's".
In the Dr...the "three r's" are....rest, relaxation and run away from responsability.
This will not work in today's competative society.

Mr. President One of the reasons that schools cannot have more effective teaching methods, is because some of the teachers are too stupid to teach at that level. You first have to eliminate mediocre teachers and replace them with intellectuals who can teach all these advanced subjects. Also teachers must themselves have love of teaching in order to encourage it in their pupils. Few teachers are passionate about teaching.

I spent today driving from Santo Domingo to La Romana, I haven't been past Juan Dolio for two years. I was impressed on how this area alone has progressed in a relatively short time.
Leonel alone can't fix what is wrong with the DR but he is paving the road for future generations.
This country is developing an infrastructure like no other in this part of the world.
He is a visionary and anyone who can see past the end of their nose understands what I am saying.
Education well most of that starts at home doesn't it ?

I agree with ndelvalle instead of people presenting constructive criticisms and solutions to problems all most do is talk crap and they dont not represent the greater culture but it might be because most knowledgeable people don't want to waste their time engaging with these fools who barely pick up a book, listen to the radio or have compassion towards others and also lack understanding of the world in general world/politics and society, mostly immerse themselves in " pop culture".
