Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic education is below the regional average in test scores in math, natural science and
language, revealed the Second Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (SERCE).
Led by UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean
(OREALC/UNESCO Santiago), the Survey was coordinated and implemented by the
Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE).
The Study targeted Third and Sixth Grade Primary Education students in
16 Latin American countries who were
administered especially designed Mathematics, Language (Reading and Writing) and
Natural Science tests.
In addition to academic performance data, SERCE collects
background information on students and their families, school teachers and
directors, in order to identify and gain insight into the factors that have the
strongest influence on student performance.
According to the study, only 1% of Dominican
students received max scores in reading comprehension, compared to 50% of Cuban
students.

Wake up everybody!!! The money that is stolen daily by our government officials could have been used to prevent us from raising another generation of illiterate, untrained Dominicans.

I can not remember details but was there not a survey a year or so ago that said something like 70% of parents think it is ok to pull children out of school to work. This is a problem that goes beyond the government corruption.

The problems with D.R. educational systems is that it wants to emulate the U.S. system but with a lot of national emphasis on patriotism. There is no education/instructions but rather it has become a major business which is the reasons to start the school year earlier. The school hours had been reduced as well, for example, my son attends a private school and now at 8 years of age he has entered the fifth grade. His hours are from two p.m. to 5:30 p.m., thats three and a half hours. The rest period accounts from thirty minutes to forty-five minutes which leaves less than three hours of instructions but as we all know, children need time to settle in to begin a lesson. Taking that into account it leaves about two and a half hours of instruction. During the five days, one day is dedicated to sport and another to religion. This leaves only three days of academic instructions. I tell my wife not to worried about cause I will teach him as I've done with our other son who is now in the --

attending the university. I've prepared him for that. School is only instructions while education is taught in the home. At one time in D.R. there was both instructions and education. There was no need to send a child to private school, I didn't attended public school in D.R. but some of my relatives did and as far as I know there was not that much of a different. The school hours were longer -- from eight in the morning to three in the afternoon. The same was in the U.S. when we arrieved. Many excuses are being used today to start early and to cut the hours of instructions but it does not matter what excuses are presented cause this way is good for business. To start my son in school this year it costs us over three hundred dollars/over DR$10.000.00 pesos and thats only for the books and uniformed as well as his recreationl/sport clothed. D.R parents are forced to paid a high price and those that can't won't see their children score cause they are not in that one percent.

This is truly embarrassing. I hope the statistics dramatically change for later grades, especially high school. If we aren't offering our students with good quality eduaction how will our country continue stepping foward?
Hectorvargas and Jonboz both have a good point. The education a child receives can only be good if the child learns to value it. Through the parent a child needs to learn how important it is to study and work hard academically.
But, at the same time our government needs to do a better job of rewarding our educated who complete college. I have many family members who completed college in the D.R but can't find a job. The government likes to stick people they know into jobs rather than sticking those who are more qualified and educated.

those are some powerful observations, chill. powerful, and true. people think that education is bad in the DR; they fail to realise how bad it really is. being behind the rest of the region is one thing, but being WAAAAAY behind cannot be good for the future. competition is everything, but it is nothing if you are unequipped to compete.

Do you guys remember a few years ago when Spain was making several hundred visas for hotel workers but they had to prove qualifications and the government was upset that they were going to take the qualified people from Punta Cana. Maids and bus boys in the rest of the world that is the entry level jobs but here the government was complaining of brain drain.

I can not remeber the Details to the T but it was like 300 Dominicanos were going to be allowed to go to Spain on work visas. Anyway the complaints we made by the tourism ministry becasue the people that they were looking for were all supposed to be experianced in that industry.

Education what ? we don’t need any stinking education. Imagine DR with educated people. That would mean less whores for sex tourism. Less Dominican that would want to leave the country for BS jobs in foreign countries, no more cheap labor for Spain and U.S.
Education what about shoe shine boys and teenage prostitution, that’s a must for the tourist. If we had education we would not be allowing the Spaniards to own every single hotel in DR. education forget about it, A vote for education is a vote for prosperity, and we don’t need some Dominicans with education. I rather have a nice shiny train , doesn’t that sound a lot better.
If we had education then we would not be trying to train our children as baseball players, and if they don’t make it in the majors they become bums. Because all they know is baseball.
Look at Leo He studied out of the country, and he is very good at his profession. Which is thievery
