Santo Domingo.– A tropical storm warning is in effect for the northern coast of the Dominican Replublic, from Cabo Frances Viejo westward to the northern border with Haiti and for the northern peninsula of Haiti, from the border with the Dominican Republic to Gonaives.
Interests in other parts of Cuba and the Bahamas, as well as south Florida and the Florida Keys, should closely monitor the progress of this potentially dangerous hurricane.
Ike is still a category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of 115 mph and higher gusts. Some fluctuations are expected over the next 48 hours, but Ike is forecast to remain major hurricane during this period. The estimated minimum central pressure of 962 mb.
Hurricane force winds extend to about 45 miles from the centre and tropical storm force winds extend to about 125 miles from the center.
Ike is moving west-southwest at close to 16 mph and this motion is, generally, expected to continue, with a more westward motion starting by tomorrow. On this track, Ike is likely to pass over, or near to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the south eastern Bahamas late today, or early on Sunday and near the central Bahamas and northern coast of Cuba on Sunday night and early Monday.

It is no wonder that tourists are scared to death about travelling here.....the headline is extremely misleading. The country is not under a warning...simply a portion of it.
That way if something freaky happens they can say we warned everyone.
Here's one for debate go at it!
On Saturday, Cuban officials asked the U.S. to loosen the "ruthless and cruel" decades-old trade embargo on the Communist-ruled island in the wake of deadly flooding caused by powerful storms. Cuba was also hit hard by Hurricane Gustav.
"If the government of the United States is really willing to cooperate with the Cuban people in face of the tragedy of the hurricane, it is requested to allow the sale to Cuba of those materials considered indispensable and to suspend the restrictions that prevent U.S. companies from offering private commercial credits to our country for the purchase of food in the United States," said the statement from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"We do not believe that at this time it is necessary to loosen the restrictions on remittances and travel to Cuba to accomplish the objective of aiding the hurricane victims," the statement said.

I am going to travel to Punta Cana with my wife on the 15th September. What do you think, should I come, or rather stay at home? Escott said, "Yup and the portion that never has been hit by a hurricane, unlike Punta Cana:)" - This does not sound really good :)
