Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernández says that Dominicans should unite in the face of current international economic uncertainties and work together to create a consensus where all sectors agree to achieve a series of short and medium-term goals aimed at helping the country mitigate the effects of the global economic crisis.
He defended his decision to hold a summit meeting scheduled for January 28th and organized by Economy, Planning and Development Minister Temistocles Montás, and said the government would demonstrate an open and tolerant attitude towards the positions that emerge.
“We really need national unity in the face of the threat of the global economic crisis. There is not time for politicization, it’s time for national unity, we all have to take part and find ways to mitigate the crisis”, said the president, in a radio interview with journalist Huchi Lora.
Fernández added that the electricity problem is a key point on the summit agenda, as well as crime and drug trafficking, which he said are also affecting most other countries in the region.
He reiterated his concern about the lack of international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, especially on the part of the United States, saying that although the DR needs a radar system “they have not provided one for us”.
The president went on to justify the purchase of a fleet of airplanes from Brazil, saying that most drug shipments are brought into the country by air, and on the same issue mentioned that the Armed Forces needed to be cleaned up: “Who could have imagined that so many Naval Officers were involved in the Paya case”, said Fernández.
He recalled that the DR has a free trade agreement with the United States and despite the adverse effects of the economic crisis the aim has to be to increase exports. He went on to mention the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union, which will encourage Dominican exporters to diversify their target markets. Fernández also welcomed a proposal from the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) to discuss public spending during the summit. He said that the public spending increase was not due to a rise in the number of employees on the public payroll, but the rising cost of the electricity and GLP subsidies and international debt repayments.
Fernández expressed satisfaction at the news that the average price of petrol will be US$68 per barrel this year, which will reduce government subsidies to the electricity sector by US$600 million and will free the DR from having to rely on PetroCaribe financing. “During 2008 the high price of fuel caused a fiscal deficit” he said.

LF, please don't believe everything you read and hear (as your people now do with you). $68 oil for 2009 is only a projection and any crisis in the Mid East/US/Venezuela can change that dramatically overnight. You have said the same things since our campaign days on your first term as President. Now do something or step down and let someone else take over. You have become incompetent and ineffective as a leader.

This "message" from ourfearless leader is probably one of the MOST CONDESCENDING he has ever emitted.
He talks about the US not GIVING theDR the radar systems needed to effectively interdict thedrug traffic aircraft. Why in Heaven's name does he EXPECT the US to do so? The DR isaa soverign nation capable of purchasing that military hardware necessary to properly defend it's borders against such incursions IF THAT GOVERNMENT WOULD MAKE PROPER USE OF THE FUNDS GENERATED BY THEIR TAXATION SYSTEM!
Instead, the government spends BILLIONS on a METRO SYSTEM which serves a minor portion of the total population. I call Leonel's statement what it is--LAME EXCUSES for not fulfilling the government's responsibilities to it's people.
We have heard nothing substantive and certainly haven't seen any substantive action other than eye-wash from the past three administrations and that Leonel has the audacity to make such a statement as he has is ludecrous to say the least.

Where was the need for consensus when you "Borrowed" money for the Sunland deal?
Where was the need for consensus when you PARDONED the criminal Vivian Lubrano de Castillo?

actually, i must concede that i feel sympathy for the prez. he has got to go down in history as one of the truly inept leaders of all time, given his tools. at least Hippo had an excuse; he never told anyone he was bright. poor Leo comes with all these incandescent credentials, and is as useful as teats on a bull. his greatest ability is putting the blame for his failure on others. now, we cannot fight drugs because Uncle Sam is a scrooge who will not give us radar. well, dude, why not postpone the 93 million dollar expenditure on fighter planes until you get radar? his second great talent is taking to the podium , giving flowery speeches, which mean nothing. and, he is as good a frequent flier as i have ever seen. besides all that, he is a waste of air.

welcome back, TexasBill. you said a mouthful, my friend; if he had not expanded the government payroll by 43% in the last 4 years, giving no show botella jobs to his supporters, maybe we would have enough money to buy our own radar. Leo is like a beggar dressed in a tuxedo.

Leonel is facing the reality. DR projection has to be revised. We are in a world crisis. Tough times are ahead.

Until weeks ago you (Leo), and his Lackeys were flaunting that DR would go unscathed in spite of the rest of the world's financial difficulty; Now, presto-changeo, it's 180 degrees different: Yeah, we're having a Eco-nemic Crisis.
These guys get paid good salaries to run governments here in DR, and around the world, yet, they pretend that they can lie to people because they consider people's attention span is only 3 days long; And with a straight face (like a hooker lying about her mother passing away, etc) tell the biggest lies.
